Newbie - shall help daughter with -89 Celica
Hi there.
My daughter got a -89 Celica with 3S-GE engine. It needs to gain some preformance, be tuned correctly. I have Chiltons Celica 86-93 Service Manual. Problem 1. At acceleration the car hesitates at abt. 3800 rpm, it feels like misfire. When she pass 5000 rpm its getting better but not good in my opinion. The acceleration up to 3800 rpm is smooth as long as I keep the "economy lamp" green, when it switch to yellow it feels like some kind of misfire. In a tread I read about MAF sensor and felt - thereīs the problem, just some cleaning and the problem is solved. I dinīt finda any MAF and acc. to Chilton there is none . Long Life Spark plugs PK20R8 New distributor rotor and cap. Sparkplug cables resistance between 10,55 kohm (cyl1) to 5,36 kohm cyl4). Have any of You a good advice to me ? Problem 2 Passenger side "frog-eye" starts open-close sometime during driving. If I pull over and stop with the engine runnig it stays open. If I press on the lid it stays open, itīs locked in open position. When I start driving again it can start open-close again. I looks like it should be related to the voltage. Engine running at idle - less voltage. Engine running at 3-4000 rpm - more voltage and open-close cycle. Have any of You a good advice to me about this one also ? Borjan

Problem 1, try doing a tune up, new air filter, plugs wires. Clean the throttle body out well, and check your sensors, make sure its all connected well.
Second problem. Couse be bad wiring, or the motor is seized, and stuggling to open. You may need to replace the light with one from the junk yard. I used to have an 88 GT-S, and that sucker moved. Handling was awesome. Really fun cars, as long as the rust doesnt start attacking.

None of the sketches, pics in the manual shows this engine and acc. to tables i Chilton manual the last 3S-GE engines are from 1989. http://tcs.teamymse.net/bildgalleri/...0/P7040017.jpg Anyway I jumped E1-TE1 in checkconnector, connected strob to cyl 1 and checked timing, not 10 deg TDC, it was more like 5 deg after TDC ?? How is that possible, the car has been running OK until lately ? Checked the fail codes and got 2 - 1 (O2-sensor). Cleared the failure code by unplug EFI-fuse (15A) a couple of minutes. The code did not come back after driving 15-20 minutes. Will that mean that the sensor is OK ?? Further investigations to be done. Bye for now/borjan
