new celica

whats up everyone i'm looking at a 1990 celica im not sure of the trim. it's an automatic thats all i know. my next door neighbor is selling it for 800 good body and runs. i dont anything about these cars so for someone who is looking to build and race is it a good start

well first off, let me welcome you to celispeed. as for the celi, it all depends. more info would be nice.

modified factory airbox, k&n panel filter, removed back seat, stg 2 clutch, c-one style frp high rise wide bulge scoop, pure white driving, highs, and fogs, 6" stubby antenna, filled in rear lp valance black housing head and tail lights, de-badged, adjustable coilovers(2-2.5 drop) after market center mount fog lights.
need to do:
mount hood diffusers, re-do axle back
"keep racing on the track and off the roads"

0-60: top of 2nd gear

I would suggest hitting up the 5th gen forum.

OK I was just woorried that swapping engines would be a pain cause its an auto and I don't know how much the potential the1.6 has if I was to keep the engine in there

the 1.6 aint a bad motor but if your interested in raceing and high hp applications the 1.6 or 4afe isnt the way to go. if you want serious power you need to look at getting a GT/GTS or better yet a alltrac. also in my opinion the automatic is the killer on the deal.


also what type of racing are you thinking about. drag. circuit. drift. rally. autox.

for 800 and a good body it sounds like a decent deal. 1.6L 4afe is a decent little motor but not powerful. If your wanting to race then your probably gonna want to do a 5 speed conversion.
The ST isn't a bad platform to start with I'd just rather start a build with a 5 speed but the junk yard can solve that pretty easily I'm sure
