Hello and help!

Hi there, I just ran across your forum looking for answers to a question. I bought an 89 celica gt for a commuter/toy on sunday this week, I got some bugs worked out because it had been sitting, such as tires and fluids, battery etc. today after about 210 miles traveling for work it started to sound like it had a miss for a little while, when I got home, it seemed hot when I lifted the hood, a little smoke but not much, an hour later I went out and started it, it seemed to run smooth despite condensation out the exhaust. any idea's? Head gasket? please help! also the vehicle has 280,000 miles.

Re: Hello and help!

Try a HG test and check. That's the only way to be sure. If it is the headgasket, just get an engine as they don't cost much and is simple to drop in.

Re: Hello and help!

No, if you want the 3S-GE or 3S-GTE you'll need more then just the motor which is going to make it harder; but as for fixing your issue a new motor is easier and will cost less then a new headgasket. A new engine is about $500 I believe and the job can be done in a few hours or less if you have help and the tools.

Like I said before do the BHG test first and see where you stand. Don't want to go buying a new engine yet just to find out yours is perfectly good.

Re: Hello and help!

what is the bhg test? It has condensation out the exhaust, chokes out every now and then and bubbles in the radiator. that is what I am going off of. also, how do I tell which engine it is, I thought it was a 3sge?

Re: Hello and help!

The BHG test is a kit you get from your local autoparts store that can tell if you have oil in your radiator fluids. Oil in the radiator is a indicator of a BHG. Try this, look under your oil cap and see if there is a white milky resdue, if so that means you have water in your oil again meaning a BHG. Still do the test as the kit is very cheap. Your engine should be a 3S-FE not a 3S-GE as your car is a GT model not GT-S.
