insurance and the swap
So today I was thinking is speed really worth risking getting sued by someone of an accident occurs and my insurance refuses to insure because of a swapped engine and mods. My insurance knows that i have exhaust as a "performance modification" and from what I can remember they didnt liek ti much. So I call today and tell them my engine is getting old and im thinking of importing the 2.0 liter turbo engine that drops into my car...the rep asks around and says we cant insure that. So I say that makes no sense let me talk to the manager. I talk to the manager and i turns out he used to own a 5th gen! He says yes that engine can be approved as a replacement for your current 2.2 liter as long as no mods are done to it ton increase power. He said the exhasut and skirts package was ok but was very concerned about the suspension and said if I drop it on aftermarket shocks and springs or coilovers my policy would be canceled. But he approved the swap the body shit and the exhaust!!! This is alot of weight off my shoulder because I was inclngin towards not doing it because of insurance.

I posted a link a while back about a company that was going to start insuring performance vehicles that couldn't get insurance other places...I'll do some searching and see if I can find it (it'd be worth looking into at least)
edit : alrite, link has been taken down...and no new news...slated to come June/01/06...I'll update with more news, as soon as I can get some

oh this is TD insurance (meloche Monnex). I am VERY surprised they approved it, normally they give you the "we dont deal with modified cars" speach but I made it seem like my car was having issues and I needed a new engine.

yea, but they don't want you to mod anything else...is why I'm saying this other company (not quite up and running yet) it will be selling modified car insurance...I haven't been able to get a whole lot of info on it yet. I found out about it on the Toronto subaru club forums. This company will be selling insurance to people who have modified (yet street legal/emission passing) cars. They are supposed to be up and going for june 1st, but I haven't heard much about it. I asked if there was any more info on it, or links about it, just waiting for a reply. Just thinking maybe it'd be worth a look into...if I can get the info...

^Get out of full coverage. You won't get a dime anyway when they see the turbo.
Also rule no.1: don't tell them anything about mods when they ask. Play dumb and you have 50% change they didn't check it. I was stupid enough to tell them the truth and I got nothing. Of course they can't raise my rate because they void the policy and the accident never happened. Last edited by Pineapple : 05-11-2006 at 05:59 PM. |

state farm paid me $15G's (which I squandered in my younger days) for having a broken arm, and sitting on my ass for a summer...given it took them almost a yr to pay out, I still got it.
no sense on getting comprehensive when your car is worth nothing to them...they won't pay out shit anyway, just paying extra to help their capital gains

Pinney, Are you saying that if you do not tell the INS about mods they can void the policy but that only counts on what they would have to payout as far as the car goes but would be forced to pay medical bills?

If you don't tell them about the mods, it depends on the adjuster to find out what's on the car. If he's stupid enough to miss the turbo, you're lucky. If he find out, they can ONLY deny paying for the car but still have to foot the medical bill.
When I totalled my Corolla, they didn't pay anything on the car policy: repair, tow, storage, rental. They did pay my medical because its by law. Don't get a rental if you think they'll void it. They approved my rental then tell me they're not paying, assholes. So 3th party only in my modded cars. Just to cover payment for others. It'll be more complicated if your accident result in a lawsuit. |
