new efforts to stop replica kits
Recent update regarding knock off parts via SEMA.
GOVERNMENT AND INDUSTRY EXPAND EFFORTS TO STOP COUNTERFEITERS Officials representing seven United States Government agencies traveled to Europe in June to meet with their foreign counterparts. The meetings are part of the Bush Administration’s Strategy Targeting Organized Piracy (STOP!) initiative to coordinate international efforts to enforce intellectual property rights (IPR). The officials met with their Asian counterparts in April. The governments are instituting measures to: Improve and expand information exchanges. Strengthen border control measures and keep global supply chains free of infringing goods. Boost investigation and prosecution of money laundering crimes associated with trade in fakes. Raise the stakes for global pirates and counterfeiters by improving law enforcement methods. Standardize the process for registering trademarks. SEMA is working with the Coalition Against Counterfeiting and Piracy (CACP) to support the “Stop Counterfeiting in Manufactured Goods Act” (HR 32). The bill would strengthen U.S. trademark law by making it mandatory to seize and destroy counterfeit goods, as well as the equipment used to produce the counterfeit goods. That is important because the counterfeiter could simply start up another operation if the machinery is not seized. The bill would also close a loophole in the law that allows counterfeiters to sell counterfeit trademarks for others to put on counterfeit products. The bill has been passed by the U.S. House of Representatives and we are hoping that the Senate will pass the bill as well this summer or next fall. The CACP’s goals are to: Implement a set of guidelines to help manufacturers and retailers control global supply chains and keep them free of pirated goods. Work with all relevant government agencies to ensure greater detection, enforcement, and prosecution of IP crimes. Encourage and coordinate greater research, data gathering, and communications efforts about the impact of counterfeiting and piracy. Develop and adopt broad-based legislation to strengthen U.S. law.
