Need help trying to figure out a sound

I've noticed in the past few weeks, whenever I'm in gear and just let the car coast down, I hear a funny noise coming from what seems to be the tranny. It also happens if I happen to be in like 3rd or 4th going 30-40 and the tranny is really pulling, I can hear it louder then. It's sounds like....almost like a grumbling that starts at a higher pitch and eventually (3-4 seconds) grumbles down to a low pitch. If I hear the sound at any point and then engage the clutch, it disappears right away. If I then let the clutch out, it comes back (again only when I'm slowing down with the trany in traffic).

Since day one, I've sometimes ran into difficulty going into reverse or miss shifting on 4th gear. This happens once and awhile. I got 68,000 on my car and should have some sort of power train warranty left.

BTW, I drive an 03' GT, stick with no mods (either then a strut bar).

Any clues as to what that sound might be?

I honestly have no clue but if your car still has warranty I strongly suggest you book an appt. at your local dealership to get it checked out.

Nem,
look underneath at your exhaust flanges. Check and make sure they are tight and the springs on the bolts are compressed. The celica has a natural tendency to push the pipe and to the side when in gear. By pressing the clutch in, you limit the amount of RPM's to the engine, therefore the pipe drops and has no back pressure. If it isnt that, then it could possibly be your transmission. Check the flange first, and then if that doesnt clear it up, check with the dealer.
