Shifting issues, and engine hesitation

Hey I just purchsed a 94 celica gt 5spd with many miles on it. Car runs and drives pretty good, besides needing struts real bad. but when shifting it seems like engine drops rpms way too quickly so its hard to get smooth shifts. also when driving at a steady speed and then i take off accelerator the car jerks. engine seems to hesitate or sputter every so often barely noticable but i do notice mostly slower speeds in town. what should i be looking at? fuel injectors very dirty or could it be? thanks.

I did find out this weekend that the intake hose that runs to the air filter box has a big crack in it pretty near split in half i wonder if it is getting way too much air? and that is causing its erractic behaviour?

cant get too much air as long as your manifold isn't cut....

the jerk is probably in the tranny and it's jsut that the tranny is designed to either be under load or resisting the car.. the jerk is the transition between them

faster rpm movemnt is good and is the goal of lightweight clutches and flywheels so i can't imagine that's a bad thing infact i think you need to learn the car a bit more before you hate on her

maybe a little seafoam treatment would help work out the kinks. car has 170k on it and looks like its got some carbon buildup. maybe running a little rough from that ya thinks?
