testing for failed ignition coil ??
1993 celica (2.2 L 5S-FE engine) suddendly fails to start. Only exhibited starting problem once before, and it was time before complete failure.
tested ignition coil -secondary resistance OK, primary a little high out of range. but new coil is high out of range also, so maybe ohm meter is off. haven't figured out how to get distributor off to change coil - can't locate second mounting bolt - after pulling first bolt distributor still firmly in place. But question is this - if I pull a spark plug - connect the plug back to the plug wire - try to start and see a spark, can I assume that it's not the ignition system but possibly the fuel system ? And if fuel system what would be likley cause ? thanks... |

Pull spark plug wire. Place an old plug in. Ground the threaded part of the plug, crank the engine and see if you see sparks. Pull spark out from the engine and see if you smell gas. Distributor pull out. It only got one bolt. Don't you have extarnal coil?

Thanks...
The ignition coil is under the distrubutor cap and can't be changed without pulling distributor out. But when I pulled off the one bolt the distributor was still firmly in place so I assumed there was another bolt I couldn't see or get to holding it in place. So I put it back together. Are you saying for a 1993 2.2 L 5S-FE engine there's only one bolt holding distributor in place? If so what's keeping it in place? Will check for spark next before doing anything else. |
