89 celica motor swap.

Will a 90 celica 2200 motor fit in a 89 gt-s? I just got this car a month ago and it already needs a new motor. Which other motors will fit without too much hassle? I dont know much about these cars so any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: 89 celica motor swap.

Since you don't know much just get another 3S-GE motor. The 3S-GE motor has the same horsepower as the 5S-FE and it's a better motor anyway.

Re: 89 celica motor swap.

Alright I think I found one of the imported 3s-ge motors. We just got the old motor out today and should be gettin this new one soon. The only sketchy part is the motor has to be shipped in so I cant even see it before I buy it. The company that imports them gives a 4 month warranty but it would suck a lot to get it in there and then find out somethings wrong.

Re: 89 celica motor swap.

Make sure to replace gasket and other simple maintance on the motor while its out, it'll save you a lot of money.

3S-GE = performance
5S-FE/3S-FE = economy

Re: 89 celica motor swap.

is the wiring completely different on the jdm motors? I saw in one of the other threads that there is no egr on the jdm motors. what else is different about them?

Re: 89 celica motor swap.

If it's the same year engine 86-89 3S-GE then the EGR ports should be visable on the head but block off with plates. You'll have to resue your intake manifold. It's best to check with the seller about it. True some JDM engines doesn't have the ports at all but I've only found that on newer engines.

Canada Re: 89 celica motor swap.

alright well we went over to get that jdm motor the other day. they had 3 of them. 2 of them looked like they had been sitting at the bottom of the ocean, and one of them had some markings on it and the slimey owner told us that meant it hadn't been started. the pulleys on one of the motors was completely seized and then to prove to us that it was a good motor the guy stuck a ratchet on the crank and started turning it. he got a couple turns and then that seized. so he went over to the last motor and did the same and it turned freeley and he said that proved it was good. he was way too sketchy and we ended up not getting one. so we went home empty handed and now I think we're giving up. im going to have to get rid of the car and cut my losses. I really don't want to do this because I loved that car but I don't really have a choice. If any one on here wants it I'll post it on here for sale.

Re: 89 celica motor swap.

oh and we went to the toyota dealer because another wrecker we went to told us that a '90 camry motor would fit. and the toyota guy told us that importing the jdm motors is illegal and they use them for anchors on the shipping containers!!! no wonder they looked like they'd been on the bottom of the ocean.

Re: 89 celica motor swap.

That sucks, but good luck with the sale. The camary motor would fit but its not the correct motor. The toyota guy you spoke with doesn't know what he's talking about, imported JDM engines are legal and if install in a UDM car then it must be equiped with all smog related material, ie CAT, EGR, Etc. If you do decide keeping the car, it's best to buy the motor from a well known shop that will warranty the motor for you.
