Oil Catch Can help
I just installed an oil catch can on my 90 gt and over a period of 2 1/2 months i've collected approx 500ml of oil and froth from the engine??? How much oil is this thing suppose to catch? is this normal? I changed my oil a few weeks back and didn't check the level but I dumped it today and it was almost 400ml. Anyone have this happen to them? Is this normal?

Re: Oil Catch Can help
How can you tell? the oil in the can looks clean, like I can pour it back in the block but im not sure why its pumping out so much! if I didn't do the oil can bypass all that oil would have ended up on my intake... Is it my pcv? I just checked it again today and the damn can is more then half full already since Jan 24th. I used a clear Nestea bottle for the can Ill see if i can get pics to show.
im stumped could it be my rings? |

Re: Oil Catch Can help
not necessarily. The weather conditions play a large role in the collection of fluids. With the cold weather I have to dump out my catch can every 2-4 weeks mostly because of condensation. Not using a thermostat doesn't help the situation either. At least its working. Does your car run at normal operating temperatures?

Re: Oil Catch Can help
The catch can collect the oil, moisture and blow-by gas from the engine. Even in cold and raining weather the catch can should never be filled up that fast. I've had my catch can for almost 2 years and I have yet to dump it. One of the main reason for the catch can to filled up fast is when the piston rings are bad or a leaking head gasket. So if you catch can is filling up fast their is something wrong and should it should be checked. Even in cold and raining weather the catch should not be collecting moisture that fast in just 2-4 weeks. The catch can filling up that fast is not normal.

Re: Oil Catch Can help
I get perfect compression across the motor, doesn't need to be dumped in the summer, but I dont use a thermostat so it needs to be emptied often in the winter.
How is your can hooked up do you have picures? 2 years JLSPEC? wow. you must have a super motor or a shit can :P |

Re: Oil Catch Can help
Here is a pic of my intake in which you can see the lines (the two clear ones with one being a tad darker) going to catch can (hidden between the side of the battery and in front of the headlight. Note: I'm using a smaller battery which allows enough room for the catch can. The clear tubes provided by Greddy wasn't long enough as you can sorta see that its attach to regular oil lines going towards my PCV vent and intake vent (intake vent not seen in pic). My motor runs pretty good for a 18 year car, it's got only 112K miles and every repair done on it has been done by toyota with all records kept from the day it left the dealer. My idle is perfect and steady no matter how hard I drive, It only changes when my AC is turn on. No oil leak or water leaks. The paint is the original paint. I'll try to get a better pic once the rain stops here in San Diego and repost, but can't say when that will be.

Re: Oil Catch Can help
Its been cold and I haven't opened my hood since the damn line hood release line froze last week (took me 30 mins to defrost it to get to to release the catch!) Ill get pics tomorrow after work, the contents is actually oil! not moisture. and yeah I used a Nestea bottle (ghetto) but after reading some articles (at 12:00 midnight) I just had to try it and 3 hours later with some copper tubing a drill and some fiberglass I had a working oil catch can. I needed to have a clear container to see how much fluid it collected. It was Nestea or Ragu man... take your pic, not too many options at 3am. Ill change it once I figure out what the problem is.
Thanks for all you input guys, ill post pics tomorrow after work. Oh and my operating temp is fine, no problems with temp. |

Re: Oil Catch Can help
OK ... Damn its cold outside! I took pictures of the amount of oil and the 'GhettoCatchCan' , I dumped the oil about Mid January (about Jan 12 or something, dumped about the same amunt of oil but it was darker coz the oil was old) I did an oil change on Jan 15 and today is Feb 19 and I've collected this much) See how theres still some froth on top, it would be great if it were coffee but damn... it not. Im getting real shitty km per full tank (40-45 dollars and about 270 - 350 km on a full tank, depending on how much highway driving i do ( I do a lot of city driving and only on the highway in the morning from Mavis Rd. to Mississauga rd Approx 2 or so km).
Any ideas on this? No oil leaks, idle is steady, power in so so... ![]() ![]() |

Re: Oil Catch Can help
I don't really know what the issue might be as I have never seen it push out direct oil. It might your PCV? It's a good thing you have that catch can in place our all that oil is going stright into the combustion chamber; talking about burning oil.

Re: Oil Catch Can help
5W20 is your problem. Oil too thin. Use at lease 5W30. Should be using 10W30. Also make sure rad and thermostat is working. Overheating engine will boil the oil also.

Re: Oil Catch Can help
Ok this is F*&ked up! Looked in the manual and thought it was the PCV Valve, it all seems like its pointing there, I stupidly drive to NAPA and pick up a new PCV valve without looking at my engine, good thing I decide to open up my hood and see if its the same.... its not, I don't have a PCV Valve on my damn engine! I thin I have an older 5SFE without a PCV it looks just like this...
![]() Now I dont know what to do??? Can i run a hose and attach a PVC or drill that pipe out and put in a new PCV valve? HELP!!! Klue I might be dropping by sooner than I thought!! Where you located in Brampton? Last edited by dups90gt : 03-01-2008 at 02:42 PM. |
