Sending unit

Just wondering if anyone knows what the brown wire on top of the sending unit cover is for? I picked up the car used and was having trouble getting it running but got it running and i see that the wire is broke off there it goes into the cover and to the sending unit. any help is appreciated! Thanks

its a 1991 2.2 gt. the cover that is under the rear seats if u take it off theres the wires that go through that and into the cover thats for the sending unit mounted on top of the gas tank. on the cover for the tank where the wires are hooked into it the brown wire is broken off.
