Re: first toy for the Frontier

Just did some reading and not really sure if Im going to keep it. it was on sale and logic told me a 5000lbs winch would pull my truck out of some shit if I got stuck. After doing some reading I need around a 9000lbs winch to be able to pull my truck out.
If i use this thing called a snatch block it'll almost work but now I have to decide if Im going to keep it or not now.

Re: first toy for the Frontier

dont rely on a snatch block. your reducing the length of your winch by half when using one. also 5000lbs winch is way to small for your truck. iv got a 2500lbs on my 700lbs quad and it can bog down so much it comes close to stopping when stuck in deep mud

Re: first toy for the Frontier

bullshit why do the manufacturing company's tell you to hang a jacket/blanket on the cable if it snaps. i knew a guy that was almost killed on the great lakes due to a guy wire snapping on bulk carrier . same type of cable, same type of loading.

not a great example but

Re: first toy for the Frontier

sorry, glass is brittle, people and animals are not, punch or tap glass it breaks punch or tap me i don't

tests have been done to create those situations and nothing has happened and if you are pulling a load and the cable snaps with out being pulled around pullies of any sort usualy it simply drops to the ground.

want proof, take a rope over a cm thick with very little elasticity, tie the rope to a door or something, pull it as hard as you like and let go, did your end hit the door? did it just fall? do you really want to take me on with this argument when i can send you math proving that for a cable that thick to chop a person in half it would have to move at mach speeds and break the sound barrier to even create a mark on a human? do you really think that if a weed whacker with a cable diameter of about a mm and a surface area of an inch with a string 1 foot long is moving at 11600 rpm (what mine actually does) then when it hits you it would be moving about 417.477273 miles per hour or roughly 671.864544 kmph and it still can't do much more than break a few layers of skin at best. with less dispersion of force and less weight to move while also incorporating a larger centrifugal force that will keep it straight isn't stead of doing what anything linear does when propelled at a stopper in a matter such as this. which is wrap around it. also this example uses a constant power source, not stored kinetic energy created by tension and released by the line giving way.

when you properly crack a whip the sound it makes it the tip of the whip breaking the speed barrier and creating a small yet audible sonic boom. this means that the tip is moving at a rate greater than 1 225.044 kmph. do you think a cable with the weight you are dealing with has that kinda power that it would move at that rate? have you any idea how much it would take to move something that heavy and solid and dence and non elastic that fast?

simple physics will tell you how much mass a cable like that has and how much speed it would take to create a snap that would sever anything.. have a look at the mythbusters episode then talk shit, until you are versed in the subject matter and semi-scientific studies involved why bother trying to call bullshit on me

there are alot of things that we are told not to do that won't kill you unless other factors fail. they are called FAIL SAFES, other companies often use bullshit to make people do things properly and also to ensure that they have covered their asses incase in some incredible case someone tightens a rope suddenly with enough force to create a snap which would amount to that kinda force.

but it's as unlikely as someone losing their head while operating a winch on a truck properly

could you make it happen?... sure...

would it happen?... no....

There are somethings we will never agree on. I love the idea of a winch but I will have intake and exhaust as well
