mr2 Q:
i was thinking about picking up an early model sw20. since its much heavier than the other generations, how is the handling on one of those. i know all about the softer suspension on the 93+ and the dangers of the early ones for an unexperienced driver... i would just like to get a comparison type answer from those who have had it and the 7gen celica.
well, does the sw20 stack up to the celica in the twisties? |

Re: mr2 Q:
from my experience, with a good aftermarket suspension (springs + good struts), along with proper rubber, the SW20 (at least my 1991) handles incredible. the only time it got squirrelly on me was in the rain on a long sweeping curve, but i recovered. otherwise the limits of the handling are really good. when it comes to emergency situations, i would rather be in a FWD 7th gen celica than the MR2, only because the break-away and loss of grip is far easier to deal with in a proper FWD machine like the celica. really depends on the type of driver you are, if you track the car, etc. i use mine as a daily driver in the spring/summer/fall and i don't track it or race it and i've never had any critical handling issues. any time ive gotten in a tense situation or momentarily lost control, it's been because of my own stupidity (not braking soon enough, going too fast for the weather conditions, not respecting the weight balance of the car when i modulate the throttle in a turn, etc).
head to head i couldn't say which would handle better, assuming we are talking stock-to-stock. so many factors play a role. they are both good. |

Re: mr2 Q:
yeah, i'm satisfied with mine in stock form
while we're discussing the mr2, why is it that the second gen is much heavier than the other two? the cast iron block should only add roughly 40 lbs to an alluminium one, considering the weight difference between the chevy lt1 and ls1 blocks is ~66lbs... such a tiny looking car... what's the deal? |

Re: mr2 Q:
its not really that tiny, at least not as tiny as the AW11s. an SW20 clocks in at around ~2800lbs i think, minus the driver. that's not too bad considering it's a bit bigger than civic hatchbacks for example, and they weigh in at around 2500-2600, no? someone actually weighed all the parts when they disassembled their SW20 over at mr2oc.com, and i think the A/C components, sound deadening material, spare tire, and t-tops were the heaviest offenders (other than the engine obviously). you might wanna take a look over there if you want to get the nitty gritty details about the weight gain of the SW20 when it debuted.
