Catalytic Smoking?

1991 4Runner SR5 V6,
Ok I just travelled for approx 25minutes, max speed was 140kph and it wasn't pushed hard.

I get to my destination, turn the vehicle off, look out the window to see.... smoke coming from the engine bay, I get the hell out and I see smoke starting to come from the mid section (right from the catalytic..) I noticed that a) it was burning hot, and a lot of steam/smoke was coming out, b) there was a funny smell, I don't know exactly what it is c) there was liquid bubbling out the sides of the catalytic and spilling onto the ground

we're a few degrees above freezing here and it had ample warmup time before even getting above 60kph

Any ideas?

Your automatic transmission lines to the ATF cooler are right over the converter if you have an auto.

Did the temp gauge show overheating? (possibly blown head gasket?)

Their is nothing wrong with your vehicle. Your cat is plugged. Cats become over time with soot, ash, unburnt fuel, ect. All you need to do is throw the cat in the trees.

actually I was wrong

today I looked again, theres something greenish spilling ONTO the catalytic... it LOOKS like coolant, but I thought coolant only circulated in the engine/rad?

it didn't evaporate instantly either but it did smoke a LOT

Thats what I was warning you about........If your head gasket is blown, then the coolant also comes out of the exhaust!!!

Unfortunately that's exactly what it is. They are known for it. Mine blew the headgasket twice in the time I owned it.
