New intake filter = no start. MAFS dead?

I got a performance intake for my 87 GT-S. To put it in, I had to unplug the MAFS and bring it inside, to get the old filter off of it. When everything was all connected with the new filter on, the car wont start. It turns, then the engine seems to fire or shake and then immidietly stop, it will keep repeating this until I move the key. Today I unplugged the battery for a while to let the elctronics reset. Still the same thing. After reading this aritlce http://www.mr2.com/TEXT/AFM_Notes.html I am thinking that this may be what I have done to mine, because I think the engines are similar or just about the same . I really am very confused over this and upset that my car is being so stubborn. If you have put an intake on thier celica, did you remove the MAFS to put it on? If so what happened?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated! thanks in advance!
