where is the sound coming from?

Hi all Celica owners, glad I found this forum.

Everytime I take my foot off the accelerator pedal (no downshift), there's a loud hum/vibration. Doesn't happen in neutral or when clutch is depressed.

01 GTS manual

Any of you guys seen this?

Thanks!

yeah, what RPM are you at when this happens. i knew a Matrix owner (same GTS engine) who had that vibration whenever he was over 3500 rpm. basically the dash would begin to vibrate/rattle, and the car was still under warantee. he ended up selling it eventually because Toyota told him "dont take it over 3500rpm". i hope thats not the same issue you are having.

Doesn't matter what speed or rpm.
I read somewhere that its the dampering shield ( I don't know what that is or even if it has one) that has given way. Any of you heard of this?
Everything else is great.

The vibrations are slight but heavier than most other cars I've driven but the hum is loud.

All it sounds like is engine braking, which is nothing bad. To correct/adjust engine braking you can any/all of the following, adjust timing, adjust injector spray, adjust the valves. It is most likely that all is needed is adjustment of your valve-train which is very easy.

Took it to the Toyota dealer. Told the service about this problem.
The service guy said he doesn't know about manual transmissions.

AWESOME!!!!

Case yet to be resolved.

"he doesn't know about manual transmissions."

what?!

that's like a medical doctor telling you that he doesn't know how to read a pulse.

have you tried a different dealer?

Re: where is the sound coming from?

Hey, im new here but what it could be( this was the case with my celica). There is a latch made of metal on the bottom of the car near the muffler there should be one on the opposite side also but dont worry about that. Anyway the muffler was actually rattling agains the metal. My dad and I figured that the metal part was to latch the car down when it was coming over on the barge from japan because its a hook and its on all four corners. What i suggest doing is getting someone to watch your car as it idles with you in it watch the muffler and see if its rattling against that metal. We unscrewed it and it sounds great now.

Hope that fixes it goodluck
