2ZZ-GE lift bolts
just read about a problem with the "lift bolts" braking in early model 2zz-ge. not causing any damage internaly, but hurting performance by not letting the power cam shift properly. i have noticed a diferance. when i bought my car you stomped on it at 6000 rpm it would snap forward and now it just kinda makes the vvtl-i noise. my question is has anyone else heard about these bolts braking? did anyone repaire it themselves, and if so was it easy to repair? did you take it to a dealer? and if it is a dealer repair what does it cost? please help me out with this.

apparently its a common issue and I think level of difficulty depends on your level of experience. Are you comfortable taking the valve cover off and working on the cams? I dont think the parts are cheap but u can call you toyota dealer for that Im sure they have some in stock because this happens alot.

from what i have read wear begins as soon as you start the engine. besides if your 2zz is newer then 2002 then you should be fine. as far as my ability yes i am very comfortable. i really don't want to call the toyota dealership here. had to go home on emergancy leave and didn't have time to change my own oil, and they refused to even touch it. tried again to get my trans replaced 2nd gear syncro failed and i had a pulled shift cable. they said it was my wheels fault for my trans and that was it. never even started the car. douch bag dealers. stay away from dealers they wouldn't know shit if you crapped on their face.

Actually, the lift bolts are not that expensive but they will rip you up on labor. And yes... 00-02 has had problems with this so starting 03, they used slightly better (stronger) ones and it should not be a major issue...
