GT or GTS
Currently i own a highly modified 93 Mazda Rx-7 that i am trying to sell because it is costing me to much to drive the car, i love the car, its fast as hell, but to maintain the car and keep gas in it is just too much for me to afford.
My plan is to sell my Rx-7 and buy something a little more friendly to daily driving. I've looked at Mazda 6's, Toyota Celicas, Acura RSX, and really i can't find one i truly want over the other, i like all 3. I wanted a RSX Type S until i found out they were overpriced and took premium!!! I love the Mazda 6 6 cyl. 5-speed its got great power, it looks good and thats good ol Reg. gas. I like the Celica GT but i have a feeling that it is just not enough power and i looked at a GT-S but it took premium which i thought was crazy because i didn't expect it. So here is my question is buying a GT 5-speed really worth it, does the car have any power, remember i'm used to a 400+hp monster, so i need some get up. Is the GT-S worth the extra price and worth having to pay more to fill the car up? What is the power difference?? |

gts isnt as fast as the s, but its a real good compeitior...bad thing about it is the transmission is packed kinda close resulting in a higher mishift rate
the gt is good, but you will end up regreting not getting a gts because of the power (unless turbo'd) GT is a better engine platform to turbo the type is is FTW, its comfortable, noise reduced, more power, easier to upgrade, but IMO id take the gts for its looks and ride height over the rsx |

If it helps any, my boyfriend is used to a '93 Nissan 300ZXTT. He drove (the holy crap out of) my car and he was impressed. I have an '02 GT 5spd, and I love it to death. But I think the general agreement is that a GTS is faster from the factory, with plenty of goodies that you wouldn't have to install later. Mind you, several people have commented that a GT 5spd is faster than a GTS automatic. However, if you want something to modify, a GT is a better option becoz there is a lot more room for improvement than the GTS. But with the GTS you're still going to have the problem with spending the money for Premium. If that's what you're trying to get away from, then either the Mazda or the Celica GT would be your car. Just my two cents....

actually. in terms of bolt ons the GTS responds much better then the GT. Naturally there is also more aftermarkt support for the GTS as well. and yes. auto GTS is the slowest of the bunch. it's slower then an auto GT.

not to be a hater of the celica's which i'm not..but if you're gonna get the celica gt 5-speed...i'd say go for the rsx 5-speed...more options, better bang for the buck, but not as nice looking as the celica. you're choice. but if you want something good on gas, you're most likely not gonna get good speed/acceleration from it. if you're looking to modify, also the rsx has more after market parts out there right now than there is for the celica. I wouldn't go for the mazda 6 cause that car is heavy (as it's a family sedan...or wagon if you wish) and it takes more gas than either the celica or the rsx.

if you are steering away from premium, and you want to compare to a 400hp RX-7...there is little to compare too. Most "performance" cars will take premium (or at least it is recommended)...and for the extra 0.11/L (sorry don't know my conversion to gallons) it's worth it. I'd go with the celica GT-S...even tho it takes premium...take the extra $3 (or less)/fillup. It won't be as nice as the RX-7 (not RWD, not as much HP, lots of reasons) but it will cost less to maintain...there are minor mods you can add to make it quicker (and bigger ones...ie supercharger), and even tho it takes premium, I can almost garuentee it'll be better on gas than your RX-7...
btw, good luck with the sale

Totally agree with you on the Type S comment.. When I was looking for a new car back in 02, I took a look at this car. They wanted ~$40K before taxes on a fully loaded S. Umm... no thanks.
My buddy has a 6 V6 (but auto). It's slow as hell. Heavy as hell. Soon as I hit lift in 1st in my GTS, I pull away from him and more and more as the road gets longer. I also think the V6 Mazda 6 are slightly high priced. I can't really comment on the GT that much because I've never actually been in one. But the GT-S, such a fun car to drive, great daily driver. I would not trade the lift on a GT-S for a GT. Of course, there's a big argument between which car is more easier to modify, but in the long run, if you are looking at big HP increases, you will have to rebuild your engine with all the goodys that can handle PSI anyways, sure a GT will save you some $$$ but if you're not looking at boosting anytime soon, I'd go with the GTS. In any case, you will be downgrading on the HP department for sure and all 3 of these cars will feel a little slow. RSX Type S is too much and its not that much faster than the GTS. Maz 6 is a big heavy car. You know, why not look into a WRX if you don't care about going 4 doors? It's much better than any of these cars and its AWD although I personally don't really like the looks of these. |

i've been looking at the same cars basically, my fiance hates new and old civics(shame because the new one is quite fun to drive) mazda 6-6 is too expensive for me and so is a new rsx-s, i've been looking at 02 rsxs still coming with a big price of 18-20. but now i've found a 01 gt with 46k's on it for 15 and thats what I plan to go with... i've test driven every car I want and I have to say the celica gt is the most fun car I test drove, looks win on the celica aswell. 2nd i would rate the new civic(base), 3rd rsx, 4th mazda 6-6
thats just based on what I like though... |

just thought i might clear something up the celica GT-S is FASTER than the GT in the top end. and the GT is QUICKER in the lower end. the 2zz-ge is 180bhp because it has a bigger bore then the 1zz-fe. and the 1zz-fe has a longer stroke, giving it more torque. now as far as what car to get go for the GT-S. for the engine. now as far as gas goes. if you or anyone you know knows anything about engine work. change the pistons or put a thicker head gasket on to lower the compresion from 11.5:1 to say 10.5:1 or even 9.5:1. you can run a lower octane fuel and if you ever ad boost on the stock internals you can go up to 8.5-9psi .4-.5 bar.

wtf.. is the point in saving in "gas" premium when your going to blindly mod the car and spend money on it anyway WHY is that even an issue here?
just my two cents but like the others have said its hard to compare a 400hp car vs a stock trim under 200hp -_- but ya.. rotary's take up alot of gas! |
