Shifter Stuck (HELP!)

Okay, so i was driving down the road, and i hear this squeaky-screechy noise, sounds like a brake or something, so i pull over, and inspect the brake. nothing seems wrong. i get back on the road, and not 400 yards down the road, i push in the clutch to shift into third, andthat schreechy noise comes on again, this time not going away. I immediatly pulled my car to the side of the road, to find that once i got my car into neutral, i couldnt even move the shifter side to side, let alone into a gear. Also, when my car was running and in neutral, and i popped the clutch, it made a similar screechy noise. I have an 01 GT with about 48K miles on it....any suggestions?

Either the clutch or shift cable has snapped.

To test shift cable theory get friend to sit inside holding in clutch whilst you manually move the gold block transmission gear change if you can move and hear clicks and the gear stick moves get the other person to do the same if it does'nt move into a certain position or "Pull back" on the leaver then one of the shift cables has broke.

Happened to me but I had no screech. *The gear stick just went limp. *Which leads me to the other theory the clutch might needs replacing. thinking about things might even be the "schrincos" spelling

okay, thanks for the help, but i have another variable to add to to the equation. This morning, i got into my car (it's at a garage right now), and the shifter worked fine...for a few seconds...as i continued to see if i could go through the gears, it continually tightened until i was back at a shifter that didn't move at all.[/i]
