HELP: CEL and squeaking belt
Hi there guys:
I need your help and I have 2 problems with my gf car. She owns a 2000 celica gts. 1. Lately there has been a check engine light and I took it to autozone to see what was wrong with it and they told me it was something wrong with bank1 running to lean. After researching online, I was told to clean the maf sensor and it should be fine. Well I cleaned it and reset the ecu and car drove fine for 3-4 months. CEL came back on and car stalls on every gear when I press the gas pedal. What could be wrong? I clean the MAF sensor and reset it again the next day...CEL came back. Does toyota have a plug which you can connect a paper clip and read the code off of the check engine light like honda does? 2. My belt squeaks extremely loud in the morning when I start the car. What could it be? loose belt? bad belt? or How do I tighten up the pulleys? Any tip on how to fix it would be great and/or link me to some sites to fix it. What repair manual do you guys recommend? |

1. I'm not too sure what could be the problem but your best bet is to take it to the Toyota dealer to get the code read (OBDII) and maybe better assess...
2. I believe the squeaking is due to the belt tensioner (someone correct me if I'm wrong) |

The check engine light situation is due to bank 1 oxygen sensor going bad. I recently had that problem too. What you need to do is re-order a new O2 sensor and change it. Then reset the CPU again... That should fix the problem. If you have problem change the 02 sensor let me know.. because i was present when my mechanic changed it for me... i know exactly what to do... but u do need a lift to do the exchange.
The noise from the belt could be fixed when u change to a new timing belt. I had the same problem around 60k. The belt is about 120 bucks. the 02 sensor cost 160. But u can purchase both item onlinei for way cheaper. Or just go to a Toyota dealer parts counter and tell the counter guy that u work for another dealership such as Honda.. they would give u discounts on parts. I persoanlly work for Acura, and everything i print here are reviewed by my A techs. good luck! |

can you tell me how to change it? As I look underneath the car, I can see 2 oxygen sensor. I can see the sensor going into the exhuast pipe and then 4 wires running into the chasis and thats bout it. I believe there should be a harness at the end but none whatsoever. It also has a rubber around the wires...should I just yanked it out?

how to change o2 sensor
There are 2 o2 sensors in celica... the first one is most likely the one u need to change. Which is connected closer to the engine. The toyota tech told me that if you never changed o2 sensors on a car before its most likely the first one that had gone bad. So change the first one.
The rubber circle around the wire connects into the car. U need to yank it out... but first that end of wire is connected INSIDE of the car. You need to go into the passenger side of the car and lift up the carpets. YOu should be able to find the end of that wire. Unplug it. NOw go back out side the car... where you can pull out the o2 sensor. THe second part of the sensor is screw in by a nut... unscrew it and that part just falls right out. Then just put in the new sensor. |
