lotus elise turbo (241whp 2zz) owner with some questions
Hi guys, I own a lotus elise with forcedfed 275 turbo kit and I wanted to get your opinions on possible future performance mods. I would like to go from 240whp to 300+whp. The base kit used a Garrett GT28R Turbo and is set to 6.5 psi. I've owned this car for about a month now and I'm thinking of swapping a bigger turbo, such as GT3076 at 20 psi and possibly adding 50 shot nitrous. I understand that in order to do this, I will need to lower my compression ratio, so here are my questions:
1. Lets say that I stayed with my GT28R. How much psi can I get out of this turbo? If I lower the compression ratio, will I be able to get ~300whp out of this turbo or do I need a bigger turbo? I would just like to know if its worth it to swap a bigger turbo or just turn up the boost on mine. 2. How much do I need to lower the compression in order to run more boost on GT28R or GT3076? Would 9.0:1 be fine? What should I use to lower the compression? I was thinking of wiesco pistons, do I need anything else along with that? 3. If I were to swap a bigger turbo or turn up the boost on mine, what other components will need to be upgraded in order to handle the power. Will the ECU need to be changed? Do I even need to change anything? The intercooler is rated at 450hp, I was looking for about 300-350whp. Here are the details on the turbo kit: Garrett GT28R Turbo Stainless Steel Turbo Support System 321 Stainless Tubular Manifold Heatshielding for turbo and manifold Spearco 450 HP Intercooler Core 750CM Puller Fan Aluminum Dedicated Intercooler Ducting Powder coated Aluminum Intercooler Pipes with isolator Mounts and Chassis Brackets Samco Intercooler Hose 304 Stainless 3 Inch exhaust system with flanged removeable cat and muffler with optional tip and test pipe, using the factory donut with swivel and motorcycle springs for flex 550cc Injectors Propetitary Unichip Plug and Play Computer Dedicated Air Intake System Modified Toyota Oil Pan (core exchange) Pressure Adaptor Fitting and Line NGK Spark Plugs Bosch Porsche BOV with Plumbing for Recirculation Brackets, Braces, Lines and Fittings Engineered Engine Restraint System Basically I am looking to get at least 50 more whp with a minimal investment, preferably staying with my current turbo, but if neccessary I can upgrade. I will post pictures later. Thanks a lot for any help guys! |

Trying to push 300+WHP is probably going to cost a lot more then you'd expect. I'm pretty sure the turbo you have is sufficient to allow for 300+WHP. Lowering your comp ratio and upgrading to a bigger turbo isn't necessarily going to get you more HP. Increasing the PSI on the turbo will, but to do it safely on the Lotus tuned 2ZZ, you will definately have to lower the comp ratio along with sleeving (cast iron) your block. And if you're going to be doing this, you should get titanium valves, springs, retainers, the whole works, cause your engine will be in pieces anyways, and I don't think the stock parts will hold out much longer with F/I and HP you're looking for. I saw that you had bigger injectors but I didn't see a bigger fuel pump (unless I'm blind) which is probably a smart buy. That Plug and Play Computer... I'm guessing its a stand alone fuel management (engine management?) system... I haven't heard of it, but I know the Apexi Power F/C is great for the 2ZZ with F/I or even N/A (a little expensive). Next to that, you'll have to dyno tune your car (most likely) which could be costly and time consuming. I've been looking to F/I my 03 Celica 2ZZ when I have more money (cause I'm going to do it right... Wiesco pistons, Crower Rods, etc, etc...), and in order to hit that 300+WHP mark, its going to be quite an expensive one.
If I'm wrong with any of this or need corrections, please notify me cause I'm not an F/I genius or anything, just going with what I've come to know... |

Yep certainly does use the same motor.
turboelise if you are aiming for 300 bhp, have you considered the following mods 1) lightened fly wheel but not too light 2) LSD 3) Uprated fuel pump 255 LPH + 4) a 5th injector read somwhere this is possible. 5) COnsider the C2 tranny gears which are alot stronger than stock 6) fit a 1zz Gearbox with the above C2 Gears ;) 7) Increase the boost to 8 or 15 psi but you might want to consider upgrading the internals forged rods, springs, titanium valves etc etc. Not too sure on the piston side of things. the list goes on
