Rear Spoiler Removal

OK so I removed my rear spoiler and figured I would just plug the 4 mounting holes with a plastic push plugs but after removing the spoiler I find 4 tabs (2 for each side) sticking up and cant quite figure out how to remove them. Is it possible that they are rivits? Any idea's?

Mookster.

Re: Rear Spoiler Removal

I think I remember some one saying they are rubber or something like that... maybe try pushing them through or just pulling them out

Re: Rear Spoiler Removal

It looks like a metal rivit covered by a tough rubber nipple (like on a baby bottle). If no one advises me other wise I will attempt to grind it down as far as I can then drill it out. The next task is going to be: How do I cover up these holes? Would rather not get into the whole bondo, prime and paint thing. I would love to find some kind of cover plate. Anyone?

Mook.

Thanks Junk! I resized it to medium and it worked. Hey, I have a question for you. Do you remember a show that was on Discovery Channel called "Junk Yard Wars"? I loved that show,, always wanted to be on it.

Well once I remove these rivits then I will have 8 holes (4 on each side) to cover up. I might just cover them up with tape until maybe I can make something. I was thinking of maybe 2 individual vertical wings like 6 or 10 inches tall. Would look like a Fighter Jet with two little vertical wings on the rear deck. What do you guys think?

Mookster.

Re: Rear Spoiler Removal

Those are metal rivets that you have to drill through to remove. I removed my spoiler about a month ago and had the same problem.
I ended up just leaving the rivets there just in case I want to put my spoiler back on.

For plugging up the holes I got 2 plugs from advanced auto (to cover the bottom two holes) which were similar to the ones on the plastic cover in the engine bay and 2 plugs from home depot (nylon plugs) that I had to sand down to make them fit into the hole.

To make them match up with your car paint, you sand down the plugs (top part) with a rough sand paper then a fine sand paper. After that you paint it over with touch up paint (which I got from toyota) with about 3-5 layers. Once that is dried up you use a clear coat spray (I got from advanced auto) to protect the paint.

hope this helps =)

Re: Rear Spoiler Removal

i'm takin mine off either this week or next. probably this week, best bet if you don't wanna get into the body and paint section is to either take it to a quick body shop, like a bumper repair shop, that will do it for minimal cost, keep the spoiler on, plug it like dj or just deal with it. i'm goin the body work route and doin it right, as a body tech, personally, i would either do the work or get it done. for something minor like that, it's a one day job at a quick shop. should only take someone a few hours.
