Short Ram Intake - HELP !?

So i bought this SRI:
http://www.autogrimmig.com/servlet/t...lica-GT/Detail
The filter btw is HPS brand
Piping is 2.75"

Problem: When starting car, RPM drops to 0 and the engine "dies". It goes into the "ACC" state when all the warning lights on the gauges show but the engine is not ignited.

When I put the stock box it worked fine again.

Info:
-2002 GT 1ZZ
-All pipes, clamps, vacuum hoses, coupler, and MAF sensor, were correctly installed.
-I reset the ECU twice (disconnect negative and pump brakes)

A similar thing happened to my friends 07 Corrola S. He had to get this thing that went partially around the sensor (or something like that) to change its reading. Since the engines from my understanding are similar, can that be whats needed?

Any help would be appreciated.
P.S. I have installed several intakes without problems in the past.

Re: Short Ram Intake - HELP !?

I see from the link you provided the there is a "Mass Air Flow Sensor Plug." So I have 2 questions for you. Where is the Mass Air Flow Sensor now located? And I see you had reset the ECU twice but have you scanned your OBD II for a code? If not, get it scanned and that will at least give you a direction to go in. Try it again and if you get the Check engine light, do not reset and go to your local AutoZone or Advance Auto for a free scan. Write down the code and google it to see what system is throwing the code. If you can't get it to run with the SRI then after the Check Engine Light comes on due to the SRI (do not reset it) put your stock box back on and go for a scan to see what code you have. Hope this helps.

Re: Short Ram Intake - HELP !?

I put my stock intake back in for now so i can drive it.

the intake and MAF sensor position are identical to akley88's but in black:

I didnt even get the opportunity to get a check engine light. The engine won't stay on:
"Problem: When starting car, RPM drops to 0 and the engine "dies". It goes into the "ACC" state when all the warning lights on the gauges show but the engine is not ignited."

Re: Short Ram Intake - HELP !?

did you check to make sure that the hole the MAF goes into is sealed all the way? because I got the same brand that akley has but only for the 2zz and it took a little bit of modification to get it to mount properly

Re: Short Ram Intake - HELP !?

but are there any gaps that you can see... like for instance a gap that might cause a vacuum leak

Just an idea. I was told by my best friends sisters cousin had a room mate & her boyfriends fathers uncle said (LOL J/K) but a mechanic I know said a MAF sensor sending a incorrect signal can cause an engine to die & not run, but if you unplug the sensor the ECU will think it is defective (due to no signal at all) and go into "Fail Safe Mode" so it will run & you can at least get home. What other electronics are involved in the intake? What else can it be? Worth a try?

Re: Short Ram Intake - HELP !?

No clue. Did everything right, I am going to reinstall the intake in the afternoon.
I will try positioning the tube either further in/ further out in the coupler and filter, maybe that can be a problem. And if that does not solve anything I will hot clue the seam between the sensor and the pipe just in case air is leaking in and i didnt notice.

Re: Short Ram Intake - HELP !?

yeah thats the same design as mine and somebody else on here. all i did was remove that oem box. put the new pipe in place and attached that vacuum line that comes from under the relay fuse box. i attached the one that is attached to that vacuum line and the sensor. put it on. the vacuum line with the blue valve on it is just laying on the coolant tank not hooked up. i tightened everything real good and started the car and didnt get a check engine light.

Re: Short Ram Intake - HELP !?

I'm going out now to try to install it again. i head that some people have had trouble because the MAF port/opening was welded on backwards so the MAF would sit reversed. Can someone verify for me that it is in the correct position:

Re: Short Ram Intake - HELP !?

Check you stock intake. Take note on how the MAF mount, which side face the engine. Compare it with your SRI.

Re: Short Ram Intake - HELP !?

just installed mine and checked the position compared to alkeys. Mine has the plug facing the from bumper. Alkeys does not. Did they weld it on wrong? I think that is it. Can anyone else verify?

and the stock box had the plug visible on the right where mine is visible towards the bumper:

Re: Short Ram Intake - HELP !?

I think the plug should be inserted from the far side. I've been looking on car domain and it seems every intake for the 1zz has the plug in the back end (meaning towards the windshield). Can anyone check theirs can let me know
