Projected Prices
Im looking at buying a 94 or 95 celica gt-s but saving up enough money is hard. Im still on the lookout but by the time im ready for buying it could be 8 - 10 months. Any opinons on whether teh 2000 model or higher would be at a cheaper price and by how much? Just opinions because i am new to the car scene but LOVE the celica.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks |

Re: Projected Prices
Are you planning to buy a celica as your first car? If so, I'd suggest against it. While it is a great car to get, it's a better idea to get something less sporty as a first car due to insurance and such.

Re: Projected Prices
Is insurance really that bad over there? I mean, when I got a quote on an '88 Supra it was $2000 a year just because it's got over 170HP and it's a 6-cylinder, and I'm doing about $1200 a year right now because I'm a "new driver". Next year it drops down to about half, though. Most of the insurance companies treat the older Celicas like a friggin Camry now (and I say this because my friend got the exact same quote, down to the dollar, on his Camry).

It's actually similar here for a supra, but the celica has much higher insurance because people with celicas get into lots of accidents. Since almost nobody here has a supra, nobody gets into accidents with them and thus the insurance is ok. The 00+ gt-s is the worst for insurance. I have to pay $2800/year for just liability + fire and theft. If I wanted collision on it I would be paying over $5000/year. |

Re: Projected Prices
OH WOW :| well i certainly didnt expect insurance to be that steep! I was looking more at a 94 Celi probably GTS. Would the fact that its over 10 years old have any considerable effect on the insurance price?
Other than insurance, if the celi isnt the best for a first buy, what other car might you suggest? Something i can be you know, proud driving but then not too much of a whole in my pocket because the celica is definately in my sights. |

It might be a different story with a 94 since they have less power. Check with whatever insurance company you're going to go with, they'll give you an estimate. As far as good first cars go, if you want a manual the sentra se-r is pretty good and not bad on insurance either. You could also get a jetta or golf with the 1.8t engine, they're even better on insurance than the sentra. My first car was a solara with the v6 and insurance was quite good on it since it's got a camry drive train. It was pretty fast and looked nice but they're pretty bad for corners since they're so heavy. But still, I would get the same car if I did it over again. You could also try looking for an infiniti g20, they have motor you can turbo to hell and are cheap on insurance as well. |

Re: Projected Prices
Those ins. prices are out to lunch unless you are a teenager and/or have killed a bus load of nuns in the recent past. The obvious cheapest car to get is a Civic. But if I was going to get stuck with a Honda I would get a Prelude. There's plenty of those around Ontario, usually cheaper than comparable Celicas.

Re: Projected Prices
no man..ontario is notorious for insurance prices. If you are first driver on a 2000 plus GT expect to get gauged a bit.,...the older cars should be fine

Re: Projected Prices
Here's something sweet:
I just got a quote on a 1993 AllTrac I was about to buy and it was $250 less per year than I'm paying for my GT-S, which is weird because the AllTrac is considered to be an AWD version of the GT-S series, and the thing has +70HP rated compared to my GT-S...

Jesus, what company are you with? I've had a totalled car from a non-fault accident and my insurance is $260/month without collision. I'm 21 with a 2000 gt-s. Yours should be more like $170/month. |

Re: Projected Prices
those insurance prices dont seem too bad but then again i dont know too much :P
im planning on calling up the company my parents are with and seeing what quote they can give me. so ill post up what they say. im probably looking more towards a '94 celi just because costs are rising and things within the household so hopefully insurance wont be too steep. Does putting mods into the car like engine mods affect insurance or is it just a cost on my part that im putting in parts? nothing affecting insurance? |

Re: Projected Prices
OK SO!!
i called insurance company today and i think im going to have to put off my ambition for a celica for a while :| as a primary driver of a 94 celica... im looking at $8660 a year :| provided im still quite young this makes sense... but it looks like for now i can be an enthusiast and wait some more before i can get a celi. |
