Engine swap

My 2000 GT with 89,xxx miles is using 1 quart of oil every 200 miles. Yep 200 miles.

From what I understand a 2003 or newer is what I want. Can I use the motor out of Corolla? Something else entirely?

Re: Engine swap

Corolla had the same problem pre-03. I would look for a wrecked 03+ and do the swap. I know how annoying it is with that much oil loss. My old 2000 GT was brutal, but both my 03 GT and GT-S were fine.

Re: Engine swap

Thanks for the input.

It's almost funny. Celica engines are at least twice as much as Corolla engines.

Re: Engine swap

On the GT's there was a problem with the piston rings and cylinders, pistons going oval or something causing excessive oil consumption. i'm sure this was pre 2002 thou. across the range on the 1ZZ engines. Like Burrcold suggested get a 03 + engine then just swap your intake manifold + TB over to make it work, Other option is to have new piston and the cylinders sleeved but is alot of work and money someimtes the cost of a 2nd hand engine be it a GT or GTS sometimes works out cheaper than a strip down and new parts. Or even if you can sell or part exchange against a GTS another option.

Re: Engine swap

I found out from a Toyota mechanic & racer that the Corolla engine is not a direct swap. There's a bearing mount on the backside of the engine that is not drilled and tapped on the Corolla.

Re: Engine swap

Ive looked into it, there are differences between the corolla motor and the celica motor. As well as some tranny differences.

And thats because the last time i was at toyota, one of the customers was trying to do that with his car, he had fitments issues...etc. If it is the same engine and tranmission...they trd flywheel should have been a direct swap into a 5speed corolla, they had fitments issues with that as well. Odd...Chris?

Although im sure with some modifications its a perfect fit?

Re: Engine swap

The cost of the Corolla engine is significantly cheaper than that of the Celica. On Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market it looks like the Celica is running around $2k and the Corolla easily less than $1k.

I have no idea if it's totally a direct fit. I was just stating that Corolla's had the issue too, and that he should try to pick-up a 03+ Celica engine.

Re: Engine swap

I've heard you can just buy a new 03+ GT short block for just over a grand and put that in.
