Question Hatch doesn't stay open in cold weather

The hatch on my girlfriends 2000 Celica does not stay open in cold weather - soon as you put it up it immediately starts to fall back closed. Is there any fix for this or do the gas shocks need to be replaced? Any information on this would be greatly appreciated!

happened to me once, just kept opening and closing it, working it for 2 minutes, then it began holding, do you have an aftermarket spoiler?

Nope, totally stock. When the weather is warm the shocks hold the hatch fine, but with all this cold weather my girlfriend has a hard time putting her bags in the trunk when the hatch keeps closing on her.

If you're cheap like me...... fabricate a little support that fits around the rod. I took some small diameter PVC pipe and cut in 1/2 lengthwise. I've been using something like this on another car for years.

Re: Hatch doesn't stay open in cold weather

Have a 2k also. In cold weather, a cheap fix is a hard-hat. I went to the local Toyota dealer and was told 200 CDN per unit. Ouch. I am thinking perhaps to go to a wrecker and get a set of newer replacements there. The locking mechanism can really hurt. :-(

I'd have to agree with that. I have been pounded on the head many times..... Just get a rod, i should do that.

Re: Hatch doesn't stay open in cold weather

Ok. I simply can't stand it anymore. In this cold weather, the hatch simply comes down. I will be buying new struts, Being the original owner, and the fact this car is still awesome (I don't know what I could replace it with) makes the pain somewhat better. Hurts like hell tho = 400 CDN.

Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market is a great place to do a local search.

Even if you replace them they will still fail very soon. It's just the cold weather.

Re: Hatch doesn't stay open in cold weather

Burr, I've owned my 00 GT since new. After six years these things are toast. I have to hold the hatch up or it will close. You're right; the cold makes it much worse but after the years it is now intolerable. I will try the NAPA or Ebay route. Cheers.
