losing oil!!!

my 2000 celica gt is losing about a pint of oil every 350 miles. There is no leak and isn't smoking at all. Can't figure out where it is going. Any thoughts?

Smile Re: losing oil!!!

A kind hello to all. I have 140k on my 2000 GT. It seems to lose oil, but apparantly does not burn it. I notice about a 1/2 to 1 litre loss during the standard interval change. 10K. No smoke on hard acceleration, but it does seem that the car smells of oil after a good run. When I say this, I do not mean it is a smoke bomb. No smoke out the tail pipe, but it does smell like oil on a manifold. I believe the 1ZZ leaks under certain conditions, but the dealership says the engine is tight. Not much help here, but the car is dead reliable, fun to drive and also feels like new at 100k miles. I can forgive a bit of oil consumption/leak/?

Re: losing oil!!!

My 2000 GT does the exact same thing. It loses a small amount, but does not smoke, smell or drip/leak. I did notice a bit of oil that had run down the side of the motor on the passenger side (sorry..not too specific). But it does not look like that leak is too bad since it never drips down from there. Someone mentioned cam seals to me? Does that sound possible? My car has 69,000 miles and I'm running 5W30 Castrol full synthetic with Lubeguard oil supplement and a Beck Arnley oil filter.

Any more info or insight would be appreciated!

Re: losing oil!!!

E. synthetic can contribute to a loss problem. I run Mobil 1 in mine, 10W30, older car formula. Perhaps this is a possible factor. As the Synthetic molecules are smaller than good old dino fluid, they can sneak past seals, gaskets and such. I am seriously considering going back to the other stuff, but I do like the synthetic protection. An open invite on thoughts on this out to the list.
Dave.

Question Re: losing oil!!!

This one's out to the board. Does anyone know why the oil loss, and why specific to the 1ZZ as Burr has referred? Lastly is there a fix? Cheers.

Re: losing oil!!!

I never found a cure for my old 2000 GT, but it seems that the 03+ models did not suffer as badly.

Re: losing oil!!!

So my understanding is that the early 1zz motor has some bad piston seals/rings or something. I just bought my 2000 Celica GT and it is not under warranty. Is this something that I should be seriously concerned about (meaning- will the motor blow up on me), or will it be OK to just remedy it/maintain it by using a high mileage oil and adding oil when necessary.

Thanks,

?e

Wink Re: losing oil!!!

E, I would definitely not worry about it. if the seals and such are as you say, just keep checking the oil levels at each gas fill-up. It is in no way terrible on my car, in consideration of how much fun this thing is to me it is a small price to pay. The car has otherwise been stone reliable. Cheers and best to you for the holidays. Dave.

Re: losing oil!!!

I have the same problem i run 5W20 Royal Purple Synthetic Oil & A K&N Oil Filter, i dont use as much as i use to, some one told me vvti is simalar to v tech and that uses a oil powered silinoid to push the cams to the larger lobe correct me if im wrong but that silinod gets really hot after lot of use and because it is not directly conected to motor you usually dont see an smoke, the only time i use alot of oil is when im driving aggresive, under normal driving conditions it stays at one level, thats just my guess but how knows.

Re: losing oil!!!

1. A pint every 350miles, driving normally, something is terribly wrong.

2. A pint or half a pint between every oil changes is ok. It's normal for an engine to burn a bit of oil, depending of the driving style, of course.

3. Driving agressively (high revs) may cause an oil consumption because the rings don't have time to properly scrape the oil off the cylinder walls. the oil ends up in the combustion chamber and is burnt. (normal)

To give you an idea. 2 winters ago, I had a beater Toyota Paseo. Normal driving, (previous, very known owner), the car would burn a half a pint between every oil changes.
I drove the crap out of the thing. Rev limiter between most shifts, day and night, 7 on 7. I could burn a pint every 400km. Going back to normal driving, the oil burning stopped.

btw: I did not kill the poor paseo. I sold it to some kid who is still driving it today. 325 000km of abuse.
