Re: losing oil!!!

Okay...I am having a mystery oil burning problem also! I have a 2000 GT with 121,000 miles on it. There is no leak because I park in my garage and there is not one drop of oil on the floor. I am not sure where mine is going either??

Re: losing oil!!!

I seem to have curbed my oil loss by running some Seafoam through my crankcase (oil), as well as through the vacuum system. No idea why that would have fixed it, but it did. It's a potential $5 solution!

Re: losing oil!!!

They'll have to replace the entire short block with an '03+ one. That's the only solution that guarantees to stop the oil consumption. Lame, I know.

Question Re: losing oil!!!

E, no way. We need to go to a 03 block??? I am saying this and wondering what the heck as the 1ZZ is also used as the stock engine for the Corolla. I know a chap who had a 02, and he told me very recently that his entire engine was replaced due to this issue. Mine is not leaking at all, and I recently passed the clean air test. She is just somehow consuming about a 1/2 litre per change. I can't believe it is a block issue. E, any more details on why this is so?

Re: losing oil!!!

All of my knowledge is just what I've gleaned from this forum and especially newcelica.org
The problem is the piston rings (or so I'm told), which means you could replace the rings, but for a bit more money, you could invest in an '03+ short block (new or used) and pretty much guarantee it's fixed. Supposedly Toyota was fully aware of the issue and fixed it in the 2003+. since it is not a safety issue, they don't have to recall or even service bulletin it. I think there needs to be a class-action suit.

Re: losing oil!!!

Oh, and also try running some Seafoam. It's an excellent cleaner, and you can do it yourself! Ask for it at your parts store or check it out under the installs section on newcelica.org. I've used it and it helped my oil consumption somewhat.

Re: losing oil!!!

so l got another apointment with the shop in v.26, they are going to change the piston rings and the rod berings, hopefully this will do the trick. l return with the result.
another thing, l talked to the toyota dealer nearby and they told me that toyota have extend the warrenty on this engine (1zz) upp to 170000km or 7 years (in sweden) sadly my celica is an early model, so l´m like 8month to late to claim warranty on my car.

Re: losing oil!!!

Well the S motors suffered from leaking valve seals, I wouldn't be surprised if they couldn't get it right on the Z motors either. If you leave it sit a couple days and start it and you get a puff of blue smoke, that's most likely the cause. It's nothing to worry about if that's the case and there's really no fixing it, it's just the way they are. I have over 230k on both my "leaky" engines and no problems. One uses about a liter per 3000km but the other uses about a liter per 1000km. Back to the OP, a liter per 350 miles is excessive.

Re: losing oil!!!

01-03 celica engines have this problem. Nothing you can do but keeping a quart of oil in your car and check the level every couple of weeks and add if needed. If you over 100k on your odometer, suggest to switch to 10-30 or even 10-40 oil, it burns less. Synthetic oil burns even less but cost more. Nothing you could do but rebuild the engine, which is not worth it.

Talked to the mecanic today, heīs shanged the piston rings and the rod berings,
he said that the oil rings was completley compressed in all of the pistons that it loked like it was a part of the piston, no flexing at all, gonna pick it up on saturday, will do alot of driving the next few weeks, so I will now if the oil consuming problem is fixed.

post the result.

Re: losing oil!!!

my 2001 gt has been burning oil like crazy as well. especially lately since i have been driving it a little harder this past month.

my car is currently under the hondacare warranty from a honda dealership (dont ask me why a honda dealership would sell used toyotas, i have no idea). but anyways the warranty basically covers everything so im thinking i should take it in and get this issue completely cleared up even if it means a new block, since theyd pay for the whole thing anyways.

but the thing is that i put a cold air intake on almost 2 months ago and am worried that it might void the warranty. i know that if the mod has nothing to do with what is going wrong with the car, they will still pay for it, but is there any connection that the dealership might try to make to blame the oil loss on the cai?

i figure better safer than sorry, especially since it wouldnt be that hard to take off. but if i could keep it on with no problems that would be ideal. what you guys think?

Re: losing oil!!!

Hey everyone, my first post here.

Anyway, what a crappy one it is. I've been looking for a 2000-2001 celica, and I've done a lot of research on them between the internet, my own experience in the auto shop I work at, and my colleagues.

Apparently, these earlier 7th gen engines just have a design flaw, plain and simple. There is a MASSIVE sludge build-up in the engines from oil that is burned within the engine, due to bad piston and valve seals, but probably the most overlooked reason of all is in the design of the engine itself. The oil galleys are simply in a bad place, and as such, cause a superheating of the oil, burning it in the engine and making massive amounts of sludge that will get everywhere inside the engine. This leads to a further breakdown of seals (and more), that will allow this crappy oil to go through the combustion chambers, where the highly-efficient cat. converters burn up most all of the oil in most cases. So you'll never have an inkling that there's a problem with your engine, until your oil light comes on while driving down the freeway, you get a knock, and the thing seizes and gives you one of many pleasant problems, such as a bent valve since it's an interference motor. Thank you Toyota, thank you for crapping on our faces.

There's a class-action lawsuit out there that led Toyota to replace any damage from this, as long as you could prove you gave your car an oil change at least once a year. Still unacceptable, but eh. I really wanted a Celica, but I guess I'll just go find a diesel VW or a civic. Gas mileage, AWAAAAY!

I thought that class-action suit didn't apply to the 1zz motors...
