having lighter valves with better seals and angle's to them allows for the car to rev higher with out having to worry about the enertia or impact of the parts in the head causeing failure. but it's not at all something you would want to do this early in the game.
i don't mean to sound like a dick but if you don't know what it is and what it does you definatly don't need it. consider opening up your air ways first to allow the car to respond more effectively to your wants and then start thinking about building up the car's suspention and traction before you concern your self with head work. it can be very expencive to have a head ported, polished and rebuilt and at the moment you can find better gains elsewhere in the cars performance that will help make use of a head job further down the road on the celi but so you know, intake and exhaust won't change your life either. performance in a FWD 4 cylinder is very expencive with out forced induction and taking that route isn't for the faint of heart. i highly recomend you consider looking into one of the many turbo kits now avalible before you consider the head work unless you really want to keep the car natrualy aspirated. as it stands i know that there are a few kits for the MRS and CELICA that offer nearly completly bolt on setups that only require minor fuel and oil pan mods to get the car to make heaps more power.

there are more than 3 more that i can think of for the MRS and the matrix that will bolt up and that's before we start talking about custom work and such.
realisticaly you are getting off topic. are you saying that his next mod should be vavletrain work? also do you think that a 5 angle port and polish would do much for his power range on stock managment and stock displacment and compression?
