What swap and what to do? 92 celica GTS

Ok, I'm new to the forum and toyota cars. Really into offroading and domestic drag racing, so I know alot about mechanics (actually a certified mechanic) and fabbing custom parts. My buddy has a 92 celica GTS and is wanting to swap the engine out. He want's a turbo motor and would like to make 300 Hp at the crank. He's more than willing to take his time ot get this done and is not affraid of spending money to make sure it gets done right. He's looking at buying the motor/tranny and wiring harness/ecu, within the next month with the swap being planned for around the middle of may.
A few questions that I've got are:
Can I get awat with using the stock tranny (havy duty clutch being installed) and I've got a buddy that works at a CV shaft shop that's gonna fab custom axles for the tranny.
What other mods should be done to the engine to get 300 HP. I know of one engine that makes 255 HP (sorry for I'd don't know the engine code, but I bet that most of you guys know what I'm talking about).
The car is going to be a daily driver in the summer for him to and from work, so I'm not really wanting a crazy setup. I'm thinking with a big FMIC along with a nice freeflowing exhaust, ECU chipping and a fuel rail. I should be able to get close to the 300 crank HP my buddy wants. I'm I being realistic here or should I be looking at going another route?

No BS here, everything stated above is the plan that my buddy and I have worked out. His main concern (since this will be his first highly modded car) is that he can still drive it every day and not have to worry about things going wrong...bascally he want to be able to still trust the car to take him on small trips (only a few hours from home that is).

a 3sgte is a proven powerplant that has been used by toyota tuners to make over 500hp many times... being int he 300 club is a good goal for a daily driver but i think you shoudl really think a bit more about other things than the cool stuff like fmic's and a chip...

consider looking into an oil cooler, enlarged rad, high flow electric fans (a pair of fal's woudl do the trick) and take some steps to build the car up against issues that may arise.. getting rid off heat is always wise on a boosted car but if you want to make power on a 3sgte the way to do it is simple..build then boost....

make the engine bomb proof on 7 psi, then start considering dialing her up to 14+. i have seen plenty of morons jsut throw in a EVPC and the enjoy 20 minutes of 300+hp but if you think before you mod you should be set for a reliable 300hp powerplant that can even go further with proper breathign adjustments (cams, lifters, valve springs, underdrives, timing)

good luck

Cool, again thanks for the advice. I'd also like to see a few build sheets from others running the 3sgte to help give me an idea of what will and won't work and the mods that have been done

Alos I'd like to know what hte weak points of this engine are? Just to give me an idea of what I'm really going to work on. What tends to fail most often on these engines. I know that the motor with come from TotalJDM, since one of the guys that owns/works for the company is local in my city and his stuff is clean and he's honest (not like most of hte other local JDM suppliers). I'm also seeing all these different guys on ebay selling them from like $899 to $1700. Are there certian casting numbers that I should be looking for (better years than others).
