Checking tranny oil...

I have a 91 Celica GT with an auto tranny. Should I check the fluid with it in park or in neutral? I guess ideally it would read okay in both gears but it doesn't.

When I asked to have my tranny oil changed to synthetic the mechanic said you mean your gear oil? Isnt it the same thing?
