turbochargers use a vacuum/boost gauge but superchargers use just a boost gauge and the reason you need one is to monitor how much boost is running through your engine... if there is too much then something needs to be changed, it's never mandatory to do anything but if you want to be able to monitor it so that if something fails you can catch it before it's too late
