toyotacelicaonline.com -- go into the mods section, there are two guides on DIY CAIs, and neither required relocating the battery. You can, and it will allow you to run the CAI farther away from the manifold, which keeps the temperature down, but battery relocation is not a requirement.

Further, there's a thread up now on 6gc.net with pics of an aluminum intake with the filter positioned in the fenderwell, the pipe running through an enlarged resonator hole. He's reported issues with the filter causing the splashguards to push against the tire, but I expect that could be resolved with a longer, slimmer filter pointing down into the corner of the fender.
