so I'm tryin to get good tone out of my exhaust without makin it super loud
does anyone have any suggestions

a good size muffler, like magnaflow, will help. also make sure to have the exhaust shop install a resonator, it will get rid of any raspiness and smooth the tone out a bit.

oval sized mufflers are usually quieter than the canister type...

I agree ( if by oval sized muffer you mean a baffeled, and by canister you mean straight through design)
