ST205 Swap

I am thinking about swapping the engine in my celica for something a little bit better. I have done some research and have decided to do the ST205 or the ST185 engine swap. I was wondering if you guys knew of any good websites with information about the swap, or where I could get one for a good price. Also, correct me if I am wrong, but the ST205 is All Wheel Drive and I only need rear wheel drive. How hard would it be to do the swap in AWD, and how hard for RWD? The ST185 is RWD if I am not mistaken, so I would imagine it would be an easier swap. If I want to do a full swap, what do I need? I know I need an engine, tranny, and electrical, but as far as axles go, what do I need? I drive a 1996 Celica GT. Thanks for any help on this subject.

ST185 Celica is 4WD. N/A ST182 is FWD. Different bodyshells so trying to convert an ST182 to RWD is big $

Your 1996 Celica will be an ST202 and is FWD. Don't even think about trying to convert that to RW or 4WD. Have a look at the pics in my 'Cusco' post and you'll see hwo different the transmission tunnel is to yours to accommodate the propshaft.

You can put a 3S-GTE motor into a n/a shell and run it as a FWD using a 3SGE gearbox or a 3S-GTE box from an MR2 turbo IIRC.

Thanks for the help, I havent checked your pics yet, but I am sure I will soon understand your reasoning. How much power does the motor you mentioned have? Is there any way to convert it to RWD without spending a huge amount of money or doing a huge amount of work? Thanks for your help so far. What are some other options for my car? What would you suggest?

There is no cheap or easy option turning an ST202 into a RWD - end of story.
3S-GTE puts out around 250bhp in standard form. Shouldn't be too much of a job to transfer one into an ST202 if you can get the parts - though it would be far more economical (and sensible) to get either an ST185 or ST205 GT4 which already comes with a turbo motor and 4WD.
If you really want a RWD car, then you'll need to look at something else. Perhaps a 200SX for example?

ST18x (5th) is FWD. ST16x (4th) is FWD also. Don't try to convert FWD to RWD or FWD/RWD to AWD.

sell your car, and go and buy the allwheel drive version is you want power at the rear wheels there is no cost effective way to change your drivetrain system.

WRONG.

ST185 is a GT-Four which is 4WD. ST182 is FWD. Only the ST162 was FWD - the ST165 was 4WD.

Should have clarified that I was referring to the Gen III 3S-GTE motor.

Gen I and Gen II have much less bhp.

Piney meant the NA models.

All the ST18x, except the Turbo, are FWD, same for the ST20x.

Converting FWD to AWD/4WD/RWD, wont work. If you want RWD, buy a 240SX.
