"Sleeping Sickness"

One night, about a month ago, after a late night at work, I get In my car and start up the 7A-FE, I noticed that when I turned the wheel that there was a loud(Not hella loud, just loud enough to hear) whistling noise, I kinda get freaked out cause Im broke and would not be able to afford any repairs. So the next morning I go to Kragen's, and they tell me that Its my power steering pump and that It might be going out. My neighbor told me to put transmission fluid In the power steering, so I tried that, and the noise went away, but now Its back. I asked my dad's friend, Who Is a mechanic, and he said that the whistling noise Isnt uncommon, They call It, "Sleeping Sickness", and that Its ok. So, Having read this, Has anyone else with a 6GC had this happen?

My 5th gen have that when I turn the wheel all the way. Just make sure the fluid is top up. Better yet, drain it all out and replace with new fluid.

Cool, thanks guys. I had planned on doing that soon, along with changing the oil. Here's another question, how often do you guys change the Radiator fluid?

Green coolant, 2-3 years or when it doesn't look green. Which ever come first. Red one could last for 5 years but make sure you check to see if it get rusty every month. Its kinda hard to see rust in the red.

Re: "Sleeping Sickness"

Typically, the power steering pump makes a whining noise (either because it's under heavy load/friction or because the fluid is simply too low). Squealing/whistling is a belt, but it never hurts to replace them anyways. Still, if there's water or condensation in your power steering system, it's been known to cause some odd noises in the past. My Ford Aerostar (don't ask...) had water mixed into the power steering fluid (murky, opaque color is typically a good indicator of this for most brands) and it sounded like a boiling tea kettle. Once I bled and refilled the system, it stopped.
