1995 Celica 5 Spd for $1000 should I buy?

I have been looking for a 6th generation Celica in decent shape, but they all have such high milage. I found a 95 with 140k miles. The body is not in the best shape and the engine looks like its leaking oil around the valve cover, but here is the deal killer. I drive the Celica put it into first and was about to thow it back into N...but it wouldnt shift then the owner tells me to let the clutch go and press down on it again. So I have to double clutch everytime I need to shit the gear..he said he replaced the clutch 2 years ago so it must be the Synchros im thinking. You guys think its a good deal? Im sure I can find a tranny for about $250..a new clutch for $100.. how hard is it to change the tranny? I have done a few timing belts in my day, but never a tranny.

it all depends on your mechanical skill level. clutches arnt that hard to do. but like i said it all depends on your skil level and comfort level. to replace the tranny your going to have to remove the lower cross members. remove the cv shafts. unhook the shift linkages then unbolt the transmission and then you have acess to your clutch. if your going to do it yourself. have your flywheel resurfaced.

Yea,

the part I am not comfortable with is the flywheel/clutch part after I unbolt the tranny...Also it sounds like I am going to have to get the tranny to align just right when im putting it back... BTW the car is like 50 miles away from where I live if its the synchros I should be just fine driving once i get it in gear right...?

ha, well there were no grinding gears...but anyways turns out the title was rebuilt salvage which pretty much killed the deal for me - I even got him down to 500, but not worth the trouble @ the DMV

Can you not get the salvage title legal there? We can here in WV. Wish the car was here.
