Muffler or no Muffler?

Ok, i was just wondering what would happen to ur engine and its performance if you took of the muffler, because some of my friends took off thier muffler not only cause it sounds cool but it "increases performance with no drawbacks!" I was just wandering if that was true.

my exhaust has rusted through causing a full gap between the pipe and the muffler,

and it only sounds a bit deeper and throatier but i havnt felt any difference.

It is usually illegal depending on where you live. It might even be illegal in all 50 states. If it's not illegal because of smog then it's illegal because of noise ordanance.

The muffler pipe is broke on my car right now too. Also no performance increase that I can feel, and personally i don't think it sounds better... just broken lol.
