intermitent idling problem

my friend has a 91 GT convertible auto and it just recently started idling weird once in awhile. it will be up to normal temp. (half way on temp guage) and in drive it will idle at 1k but in neutral or park it will idle at 2k. he says when this happens, in D with no gas it will accelerate to 25mph on its own. but this only happens ONCE in awhile. what can be the problem?

Perhaps a dirty MAF sensor, or a vacuum leak.

Sounds like his throttle linkage has some slop in it. Check the throttle linkage bracket where the linkage meets the throttle body, there will be a nut on either side of the bracket im guessing that there is play between these, thus causing idle problems once in a while.

dirty MAF? im not too familiar with mass airflow sensors, but is this a general symptom of one? i'll check his throttle linkage again, but i manually played with his throttle (that circle thingy on the throttle body) and it felt fine, no slop, but i'll double check cuz i was kinda drunk at the time too (he came over late at night unexpectedly and asked me for help)

thanks for the replies
