About to pickup a 5th gen

Im about to purchase a 5th gen celica, its a 1990, the guy claims its a gt but he also said that he swapped out a 1.6l and put in the 5sfe... so is it really a GT or not? and if i wanted to swap the turbo motor in would i have trouble with it?

Re: About to pickup a 5th gen

sounds kinda funny to me. a 1.6L is an st and the 5sfe came in the gt's and gts.
To swap from a 1.6L to a 5sfe requires moving the passenger motor mount. If that is done the 3sgte swap would be much easier.

Re: About to pickup a 5th gen

Well it has a 5sfe in it right now, i was just wondering because he had mentioned the 1.6l being in it, but since the 5sfe is already there the swap would go smoothly?

Re: About to pickup a 5th gen

as long as the swap was done properly to begin with. If they didn't do their due dilagence they could have screwed up moving the engine mount and you'll go through mounts very quickly. Get the VIN and type it into carfax and it will at least tell you if it is an ST or GT. If it was originally an ST find out where the swap was done and ensure they are reputable if he did it himself use it as a bargining tool

Re: About to pickup a 5th gen

if its a GT it didnt come with a 1.6L engine. He's pulling your leg. All GT cars came with a 5sfe stock.

Re: About to pickup a 5th gen

Is the wheel 4 bolts or 5? Got strut tower bar? Sway, anti-roll bar underneath? Rear disc brake?
ST don't have any.

Re: About to pickup a 5th gen

Does GT come in coupe?
Look for caliper at the back.
An ST worth less then a GT. An ST with GT conversion worth less then a stock ST.

so since its a gt i wont have to mess with the mounts correct? and whats a ballpark price for the swap considering i do the installion myself.

Also, the car has about 204k miles on it, is it worth 1500$?? runs great and drives smooth.

Re: About to pickup a 5th gen

you wont need to move the mount. doing it yourself the swap will run anywhere from 3500-5000+ depending on if you just do a staight swap using your GT tranny and top mount intercooler. I mean the possibilities are endless on how much more money you could spend

Nope mines a Coupe, the only thing about his that puzzles me is the lack of fog lights and a spoiler which may have been shaven
