About Half an Hour of your time
Step 1:
Prise off the plastic trim around the gear gaiter (the stock gaiter is stuck to it, don't be alarmed) using the flat screwdriver. This uncovers 2 8mm hex bolts with crosshead driver slots in them at the base of the black trim around the stereo, undo these as well.
Step 2:
Prise off the top part of the black trim with a flat screwdriver - insert it between the top of the black trim and the rest of the dash and lever, it should pop out. Pull the black trim away, it stows neatly in the footwell with the cigarette lighter wiring attached.
Step 3:
There are four screws (hex and cross headed) around the stereo segments, undo these and the stereo/cup holder assembly can be pulled out. Disconnect the wiring at the back.
Step 4:
The stereo and cup holder assembly is held together by means of 2 steel sideplates screwed into the stereo (some are 2 seperate parts, radio/cassette and CD player seperate, some are Double DIN size) and clipped around the bottom of the cup holder. Unscrew the screws, and the side plates should come off - note that there are lugs locating it into the stereo parts as well so you can just undo the screws from one of the sections and slide it out!
REASSEMBLY:
Step 5:
If you have a double DIN stereo to go in it should just bolt straight into the side plates, if you have a Single DIN stereo you can always purchase something else to fill up the gap and use one of the standard mounts for your new stereo (like I did) or you can get a Single slot adapter. These will probbaly not go in using the standard mounts so it's best to follow the makers instructions with them.
Step 6:
Connect up the leads - you can get a toyota wiring to ISO plug quite cheaply, all toyotas have the same stereo leads so it's no problem finding one.
The rest is straightforward reverse of the removal.
