Need a little advice!!!!
I just picked up an 1986 toyota celica gt with the 2.0 3s-fe. I have heard and experience myself that it is hard to find things for this motor. I was wondering if I could get a little advice on whether I should keep this motor and attempt to build it or save the money for a swap?? If I could get a little help on this that would be great thanx!!!!

3sge is a great NA motor... At $600 Im guessing that it is out of another 4th gen. You also have the option of getting newer model 3sge that go as high as 210hp or you can simply go with the 3sgte which has 225

3sge is a twin cam, 2.0litre.
3sge came in 4th gen GTS, not 3sgte. The 3sgte came in the ST165 only, in the 4th gen. 3sge or 3sgte would be a good pick, with the most power obviously coming from the 3sgte. The 3sgte swap will run you $4000-$5000 depending on how much of your own work you do. It may take less, but it's always better to be pessimistic about these.... The 3sge was last found in the US in the 4th gen gts i believe. If you want a newer one, which you should, you'll have to import it most likely. The 3sgte was last found in the US in 1993, so you may not have to import it, but i would still suggest it. As Piney said, you'll need all sensors, and the ECU will have to be redone. |

^ The 5sfe would be a marked improvement over your current motor, but if you want real power, it's a no go. It's 135HP/145lbs stock, with not much aftermarket support. BUT, it isn't REALLY hard to turbo, you just won't be able to push a ton of pressure through it. A "5sfte" is classy, and you'd have something different, and it would feel pretty quick in that light car.
There is no point in getting a turbo kit for a 3sge. Pretty much, a 3sge with a turbo kit is a 3sgte. So, if you're going to do all the work, then i would go with the 3sgte, and be happy in the sleeper that will result. As for the ECU thing, not real positive, i haven't looked into it. If i see anything, i'll get back to you. |

All the S series are twin cam or DOHC.
The 5S-FE won't give you much improvement, 130HP 140ftlb. Also it'll have the same after market support as the 3S-FE, none. Save your money and do 3S-GTE swap or better look for an AllTrac. 3S-GE may have higher compression then the 3S-GTE, not ideal for FI. Last edited by Pineapple : 02-02-2006 at 01:05 AM. |
