4th Gen Celicas: worth anything?
I'm looking to pick up a spare car and there is a 4th gen Celica for sale near me. It needs a clutch. The body is in OK shape. I don't know how it runs yet, or how far the clutch is gone.
Is it worth picking up? How reliable are the 4th gen Celicas? How do they take to modding (stock is for suckers)? I currently drive a 92 Mazda Protege with limited mods, and I am in the process of rebuilding a 2001 Ford Focus that I bought from a salvage yard. For summer fun I have a 68 Dodge. The Mazda has it's problems, and I rely on it to get to my job every day, so I'd like to have a spare ride in case the Mazda decides to take a shit on me. So anyway, are these things any good? Anything I should look for? Thanks, James |

the 4th gen's are great cars. it either has the economical 3sfe or the higher reving 3sge motor in it.
Generally speaking toyota motors are quite strong and will take a serious beating before dying. As for modding celica performace parts are usually a little harder to come by and more expensive

Finding parts isn't an issue for myself because I have access to a full machine shop. I was more wondering how well they take to mods. I don't know what trim level it is. I'll take a look. I think it's the low-end model though. 5spd (duh I said it needs a clutch).

ok then you more than likely have the 3sfe (GT model) its an econo motor with like 105hp... not much point in modding it. best thing to do would be a 5sfe or 3sge swap for a small upgrade on power or go all out and 3sgte it up

I'm not looking to do all that. Most of my cash is going to rebuild my beloved Focus... that would be way too much work for a "spare car".
BTW: the car is in Milwaukee, WI and they want $150 if anyone's interested. I'll find the number and post it. |

LOL sorry to say I'd definately rather have my Focus... lots more potential there IMO. This is my second Focus so I'm "working with an old girlfriend" here... I know my way around it. The Focus means waaaaay too much to me to get rid of it for a different car (unless it was a Focus wagon...)
Not that there's anything wrong with Celica's... if you know what you're doing I'm sure you can make them fast. Especially if you can convert to GT-Four status on the 6th gens... |
