New intake filter = no start. MAFS dead?
I got a performance intake for my 87 GT-S. To put it in, I had to unplug the MAFS and bring it inside, to get the old filter off of it. When everything was all connected with the new filter on, the car wont start. It turns, then the engine seems to fire or shake and then immidietly stop, it will keep repeating this until I move the key. Today I unplugged the battery for a while to let the elctronics reset. Still the same thing. After reading this aritlce http://www.mr2.com/TEXT/AFM_Notes.html I am thinking that this may be what I have done to mine, because I think the engines are similar or just about the same . I really am very confused over this and upset that my car is being so stubborn. If you have put an intake on thier celica, did you remove the MAFS to put it on? If so what happened?
Any help would be MUCH appreciated! thanks in advance! |

Hmm, just remember that when I go the car it(around september) was apparently having problems starting. They guessed it was a sticky solenoid, because you could slam the hood shut and it would start. I am wondering if maybe this has to do with that, and its just a coincidence that I have just replaced the filter.
ALSO, after reading that article again, I noticed that I actually DID unplug the AFM the correct way, I did not mess with the screws(makes sense that you should be able to unplug a plug like that huh?). One last thing; I would like to know where the fault is, where can I get a diagnostic reading from? So, with all that info anybody got any ideas? thanks |

So the motor is cranking, but wont turn over? If I read the post corretly, you may have a fuel or spark problem. With an intake, your for sure getting enough air. Try cleaning the throttle body, clean your fuel injectors(Gasoline additive), and make sure your spark plugs and wires are good. If your not getting enough fuel(clogged injectors), or you may just need a new fuel filter.
What octane are you using in the car, and how many km/miles on the motor? Have you done any fuel/spark plug upgrades? If you try those ideas, and it still doesnt work, take off the intake piping from the throttle boddy, and while trying to start it, spray ether in. They use this in diesels to start on Really cold winter days. **CAUTION** Ether is very explosive, so dont continually spray, 4-5 secs max, stop spraying, then spray again, keep repeating, while holding the throttle open. If the car starts coming to life, then dies, you know you have a fuel problem. If nothing still happens, you have a spark problem. If you keep spraying, you will hear a loud pop, and you may go deaf for a while. As well, the can of Ether becomes a projectile. I know this first hand. ![]()

OK! been working out in the cold for a few hours with a couple friends with some more knowledge than me about engines.
Semi-Conclusion: It most likely has nothing to do with the intake or AFM, because you can hear it close after it tries to start, and there is absolutey no physical damage to this stock part. When You do try to start it, a puff of black smoke comes out the muffler and then after that (I think it's after) the fuel rail. Starter fluild does not do anything. Next thing we did was check for a spark. Checked on the 1st cylinder plug (farthest to left). No spark. Then checked the spark plug in another car IT SPARKED ALRIGHT(my friend is still in pain form not grounding it). After that, we tested the the coil by seeing if the wire would create a spark on a metal. It eventually made a VERY weak spark. SO I have concluded from that, that I need a new coil. Sound about right? also this car has been stationary for a while, and is not used to being out in the cold, and this past week it has been close to 10F so i think that it is all of these factors that are causing it not to start. And that it has nothing to do with the fact that I put an intake on it. It is just a coincidence because it is so cold. |
