88 Cel gt- car stalls, starts back up -MAF?Fuel starvation?
This car has 101k miles and is really clean however- I bought it, had it checked out and found it needed a starter and left cv boot. Now, I drive it for about 60 miles and it starts stalling. Starts back up runs for 20 seconds and stalls, starts up runs for 18-20 seconds and stalls. Over and over. MAF sensor had been drilled(fctry set calib screw) and the silicone was peeling out around the square black plastic on top. I pulled a 24 & 32 code so I got a used MAF from the junkyard for a $100 installed it and cleared the codes. Started right up, ran great, died 10 miles later, started right up and I continued home(another 20 miles). Drove the car around this weekend and it didnt do it for about 10-15 miles of driving and it did it again. It's like it starts running out of fuel, it loses power, and then the idle slowwwly drops, it sputerrs and then quits. Then you can crank it and after a few revolutions it starts back up. If you are driving and put the gas pedal to the floor it seems like it is struggling to accelerate like maybe it is starving for fuel. The compression is 175-180 on all 4 cylinders. It looks like someone has replaced the injectors but I don't know about the fuel filter.
The gas guage does not work about 99% of the time but the car has a full tank- i made sure of that. Could it be the sending unit in the tank is bad and/or maybe the filter sock in the tank is plugged? I pulled codes yesterday after it started doing it again and got a 51(switch failure) doesn't say what switch though?? But I did not get the 24 and 32 codes relating to the air meter/MAF. Please help if you've experienced this or have any ideas- thx |

this sounds similar to a problem I had... which would often happen when the air was moist (foggy, after a rain, etc...) I tried a few things, I thought it might have been either the computer or the fuel pump - but since those could be expensive problems... i decided to go with the easy solutions first.
After a few ideas I replaced the ignition coil, and the car has been running 1000x better since then... I think the old one may have had a crack in it. Anyway, thats my suggestion from my experience with my 89 GT

Check the fuel pump for flow/pressure rate.
I know a guy who replaced his and that solved the problem. But before doing this, go over all the other stuff, as this is a PITA to do.

pulled the f.filter-full of rusty gas!! I dropped the gas tank and it's full of rust and scale. I got a really clean tank from the junk yard ($75), gonna put in a new pump, sending unit and filter, clean out the lines and see what happens. I'm sure this will solve my problem. |
