5sfe swap
I have looked allover the internet for a little direction on on this swap. This is for an 87 ST162(manual) that needs a new engine. We like the economy side of the 5s and from everything I have found it seems like "Locker" is the most knowledgable on the entire internet regarding this swap. Everybody else is full of speculations (Half aren't even sure that the transmission is compatable, which is scary!). So a down and dirty would be helpful. I know that it will bolt in like a glove and that the ECU will control it just fine. Things I don't know - how late of a generation on the 5s is compatable? I should swap all the 3s sensors over correct? will the 3s harness connect to the 5s injectors? which intake and exhaust manifolds should be used? Thank you and long live Japanese classics.
P.S. Hello all, I am new to this forum and come from spending a lot of time on the Japanese Nostalgic Car forum because my first love is my '76 TE37 Corolla. although I myself have had my fair share of celicas (a '77 and 2 '82's) this time I am helping a friend who recently aquired his ST162 and is looking forward to getting it on the road. Thanks again, and I look forward to helping out and sharing in the community. |

Re: 5sfe swap
Well the 5SFE is basically the same engine as the 3SFE with .2L more of displacement (2.2L) this equates to more HP 130-135HP vs 3SFE's 116HP, and 140LB of torque VS 3SFE's 130LB's. There seems to be more after market support for the 5SFE, I believe fuel economy is about the same as the 3SFE at 28MPG highway. Best of all, the 5SFE is a direct bolt on to the engine mounts since it comes from the same engine family. Hope this helps!

Re: 5sfe swap
The 4th gen 3SGE (BEAMS) Has 197HP and 180 LB of torque. It also has Toyota's VVT-i (Varible Valve Timing With Intelligence). It was only made for Rav4's Celica's and MR2's in Japan so you would have to find someone who imports them. Still a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine and should be a direct bolt on to your current mounts. Make sure you also buy the ECU and the complete wire harness as those parts are hard to find.

Re: 5sfe swap
Those are hard to find, eBay although a little expensive has some. I doubt that junkyards have any, and it would be hard to find one on Craigslist too. I say go with eBay and good luck finding one, I always wanted one too.
