Don't tell him what he should have bought. K if u have a sx? then that is probably a dealer optioned ST. Just like the STX in the 5 gens. That means that u have the 3sfe. So it is part of the "S" series engines along with the 5sfe and the 3sge/3sgte, the later engine being the alltrac and mr2 engine. It really just depends on what u find. 4th gens came with an alltrac introductuced in 88 I think, so that will probably be your best bet. That way u can get the wireharness and everything that will fit your car perfectly. You should probably look for a front clip, that way everything u need is there and u don't have to mess around with alot of custom work. So just to clarify you want to look for a 1st generation 3sgte. It is not as prowerful as a newer generation, but it still has 180 hp and 200 tq, and there are a number of Upgrades that can make alot of different.

^That's exactly why you should buy an AllTrac in the first place. Cheaper, easier and no down time compare to a swap. Don't think so? Check out how much an AllTrac is selling for and compare to the cost of a swap: $2000-$3000. Total cost is less then swap and you got AWD. Don't even think about swap the AWD.

But look at it like this. When I bought my 5th gen for $2900 I didn't have another $5000 for an alltrac. Nor did I have the money for the higher insurance. I had $4000 so it worked great. And I"m not going to go into debt for it. So you buy a car and then when you have the money you upgrade. This summer I will be buying a front clip and doing the swap. Something I couldn't effort last year. And not having AWD isn't that big of a deal. Just means that you have to stiffen up the car pretty good. Plus less weight.

AllTrac is the AWD Turbo version of Celica in Canada, same as the GT4.

i still remember that day at the dealer, i was gonna buy a st165 with the 3sge engine but the paint was really bad. so i found another deal basic sx model, and yeh now im thinking the gt4 engine would just bolt on. (if u can fit normal engine in a gt4 chasis, surely u can fit a gt4 in a normal sx chasis) right??

Nop insurance won't cover anything even if you just got an intake. They'll acturally drop you if they find out. If you're 100% at fault in the accident, you'll have to pay for all other damages you caused. Try hit a light pole and see how much it cost to fix. Probably you can buy an AllTrac or 2.

to clarify

ST165(4th gen) Alltrac
ST185(5th gen) Alltrac (GT4 in Japan)

Theres no point in doing a swap on your car, theres more modifications than just dropping in a motor. brakes, suspension, reinforcing the car. Your talking tons of money, and believe me, delivering pizzas arent gonna get you there fast.

You should have grabed the GT-s with the 3S-GE motor. It makes more power, and easier to tune. Plus its got the "GE" head rather than the "FE" which your stuck with. The GE head is found on the higher output motors, ie 3S-GTE, the FE was designed for fuel economy. If your so speed driven, then the shittier paint shouldn't have been an issue. If you wanna go fast, dont waste money on the car you have. Save some money up, try and sell your car for a decent price, and grab a 4th gen alltrac. Their slightly easier to come by, and their much cheaper than the 5th gen. Plus the 4th gen is lighter, and can take the 200hp(2nd gen 3S-GTE) or find a JDM motor that puts out 215hp.

Just remember that going fast isnt cheap, learn to drive the car well, get a feel for it before you start push its limits.

Also your friends dont tell insurance that their car is modded, or else they wouldnt be covered, or be paying a much higher premium.

Cause they never check it out. Some insurance will let simple thing past but you better call them to find out. Don't tell them you have it already, just call and ask what if you put intake, lowering etc.
We pay insurance because we have to, even its screwing us front and back.
How I know all this? Found out the hard way when I totalled my Corolla :(
