Re: celica 1986 - cosmetics body kit (4th gen st162)
Hello all,
I am in the military and my wife, while I was deployed picked me up a 1986 Celica ST with a little deer damage. Now this was a 400 dollar car that ran like a top. The car has 363,000 miles on it, and runs like a new car. The clutch is in need of being replaced, clear coat is peeling off, and the rear struts are toast. I have cleaned up the interior, customized the gauges, and systematically gotten the car back up to par a piece at a time. I have a few questions though. The steering as abit sloppy, No doubt tie rod ends, but Id like to replace all the front end bushings with polyurethane ones, but I cannot source up a kit anywhere. The local junk yard has several 86 thru 89 gen 4's to choose from. and several GTS models. I am going to grab the strut brace from one, and I was thinking about grabbing the rear strut sets from the 88 GTS. I have been told that the struts from an 88 wont fit an 86. Why is that? They look identical. Does anyone know the difference? Im looking for alot of parts, for this car, and seem to run out of luck everywhere, except junk yards. Id like to use this car as a daily driver, and maybe someday give it to my son for his first car. I plan on repainting the car a different color, and buying some nice rims for it. I would also like to toss one of these body kits too. Does anyone live in the seattle area that either might have one, or might be selling one? Any help you guys can offer is great! A celica only parts catalog would be a dream! Thanks |

Re: celica 1986 - cosmetics body kit (4th gen st162)
Hi
My name is Jason and I have an 88 gt-s, you can check it out on the last page of the 4th gen gallery. The black coupe. I live in Tacoma. I have done pretty extensive looking for any and all performance parts for 4th gen. celicas and running out of luck is common. I have eibach pro kit lowering springs good for about 1.25". These do not mess up your caster/camber either so alignment isn't an issue after lowering. I currently have KYB AGX adjustable struts up front and KYB GR-2 in the rear. I have had the GR-2 up front and they both handle great, I just wanted a little stiffer ride up front (Tokico also makes struts). I also have SP Performance brand drilled/slotted brake rotors with EBC Green stuff pads that drastically helped braking. The GT-S models have 4 wheel disc brakes. 17" rims. I made my own cone filter adapter for the intake, but I know you can find them somewhere, and they're cheap. Universal 3" inlet cone filter works nice. Currently working on designing some vents for the drivers fender and isolating the filter from engine heat for a cold air intake upgrade. I also recently made my own urethane engine mounts using a 2 part urethane liquid from grainger.com and took the old mounts and poured the urethane in the air gaps around the crappy factory mounts. Worked great. As for urethane bushing kits, I have only found 1 place online. I haven't had the money just yet to order them and I haven't even contacted the guy, but he does bushings for all the old school toyotas and lists every bushing for the 4th gen celicas. The place is called ToyotaHeadAuto.com. They are also very reasonably priced. Exhaust is best replaced by a professional exhaust shop custom making the pieces if you want high flow or stainless. Otherwise stock steel replacements can be found. I put the Aeroform bodykit on this last May and haven't gotten around to blending it in with fiberglass and paint. They're website doesn't show it anymore, I don't think, but you can call them and order it (about $800 +100 Shipping). As for struts in the rear, the fact that the GT-S models have rear disc brake may be why the struts are different. The ST/GT models are quite different from the GT-S when it comes to drivetrain. The GT-S and alltrac turbo models have a completely different, more powerful engine, lower geared tranny, 4-wheel discs, 5 lug wheels. most sheet metal should be interchangable, ie hood, doors, fenders, trunk/hatch. All of the celicas are very reliable cars. Mine gets 27 to 33 mpg. Feel free to ask more questions. Thank you for serving in our armed forces!!! |
