Exclamation 87 celica Gt new tranny or new moter

i have an 87 celica gt and its an automatic right now but the tranny went out. i was goin to just make it a manual and leave the 3sfe engine but its hard enough to find parts now and im looking for more power. im wondering what my options are with putting a new moter in for more power.. like wat motors will fit in my style.

Re: 87 celica Gt new tranny or new moter

Lots will fit. It comes down to time, money, and experience. You can swap to a 1st gen 3SGE engine and S53 manual tranny for another 20 HP. If you're not in a heavy emission testing area (don't need an EGR, etc) you can go to a later version 3SGE and get another 15-30 HP.

From there you go to the 3SGTE turbo mated (typically) to a 5SFE (Camry '92+, Celica '90+) or 1MZFE Camry V-6) manual tranny.

Any upgrade will require a new ECU, different sensors, new wiring harness, partial or complete exhaust changes, etc. If you go turbo, you need a completely new exhaust along w/ all sorts of turbo accessories, new cooling system, etc, etc..

I've seen pictures of V-6 engines in our cars and I've heard about V-8 conversions, but those are way beyond the average backyard DIYer. Even sticking w/ a 3SFE, but changing to manual transmission will require a new ECU and changes to the wiring harness, sensors, etc.

Lots of guys do it - time, money, patience.

I'm a complete newbie to car restoration and I've pulled my 3SGE and am rebuilding it myself (except the machine shop work, of course), along w/ a new suspension and complete overhaul of my brakes.

Visit st162.com to learn from a ton of guys who have rebuilt 4th gens using all sorts of engine/tranny combos.
