Need help making plans for my 86 GT-S
Hey guys,
I've got an 86 celica GT-S that passed 100k last month. I've been fixing little things here and there that have kept it a fun little ride...It sat for a long time between the previous owner and myself so things like sticky fuel doors and antenna motors had to be replaced, but i've got a few things left on my list that i need help tackling. I need suggestions on how to go about fixing my 2nd gear syncro. I have to double clutch it above 20 when accelerating, and double clutch it above 16 when decellerating. It's an absolute pain when i'm taking the fun backroads with 90+ degree corners. Is it easier to swap the tranny, or pull the tranny, slip on a syncro, and put it back in? While i'm in there, i assume i'll do the clutch, (the previous one had 70k miles on it from the previous owner) and timing belt. I also need to replace my drivers side front fender. Where's the cheapest place to get one that's in good shape? (i've got a guy who will spray it for me, if it doesn't come in silver already) After that, it's all just making it a fun little toy. My rear shocks are a bit mushy, so i figure i'll change those, but what else is there to do on these cars (without hurting them,) to keep them fun, but still nice to drive just here and there without killing mileage? Sorry for the long post, i've just got a bunch to tackle ![]() |

Re: Need help making plans for my 86 GT-S
Probably best to buy a used tranny so you at least have a few months warranty. Rebuilding will be expensive, and if you do it yourself, time consuming. Might as well replace clutch and resurface fly wheel while you're at it.
Are you going to pull the engine? If so, timing belt and tranny removal are easy (just got done doing it myself). In the car, bigger pain. Just make sure to replace all seals and gaskets while you're under the timing cover. |

Re: Need help making plans for my 86 GT-S
i am checking UPS right now. The transmission is about 95 pounds all boxed up. I will see what they say.....(playin Jeopardy music here)...UPS says 221.56 for shipping from zip code 83647 taking 4 days. Lemme check Fedex...(more Jeopardy music).. Fedex says about 150 for the end of 5 business days. Cant really think of anymore carriers besides OD and DHL and good old USPS. Feel free to look for yourself and let me know what you find.
